If a single letter can represent the ultimate in automotive performance, that letter would be M. Launched from the company's motorsports division, BMW M has represented the highest-performing models in its lineup, starting in the late 1970s with the iconic M1. The M5 joined the U.S. lineup in the mid-1980s, and it has been one of the most exciting and entertaining sports sedans on the road ever since.

Last year, BMW introduced a new-generation 5 Series sedan with a new range of gas and electrified powertrains, but the M5 was noticeably absent from the lineup. For 2025, the M5 returns with styling and features from the redesigned 5 Series but with its first-ever electrified powertrain.

The 2025 BMW M5 is now a plug-in hybrid with a potent turbocharged V8 engine and an electric motor driving all four wheels, delivering 717 horsepower. The most powerful drivetrain ever put into a production M5, this latest version hits 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, and with enough road, it can reach 190 mph. The M5 can also be driven as a pure EV for around 25 miles.

As the top-level 5 Series, the M5 comes fully loaded with the latest high-tech features and luxurious materials throughout the cabin. This performance machine gets the new curved display already in use in the new 5 Series, and sport seats are both stylish and supportive.

BMW continues to raise the bar on rival sport sedans, but that doesn't mean the competition hasn't been keeping up. The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, Audi RS 7, and Porsche Panamera all offer variants that are as quick as the BMW. Still, it remains to be seen if they can deliver the blend of luxury, performance, and comfort that the M5 has always been known for.

The BMW M5 is expected to launch worldwide in November of 2024.

The 2025 Audi RS 6 Avant stands out as a high-performance luxury wagon that marries blistering speed with everyday practicality. As a continuation of Audi’s storied RS lineage, the RS 6 Avant combines a turbocharged V8 engine with dynamic handling and a refined interior, delivering both thrilling driving experiences and a high level of comfort. It competes directly in a niche segment, where few rivals offer the same blend of performance and practicality.

Compared to competitors like the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon and the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo, the RS 6 Avant excels in delivering a more approachable blend of luxury and performance. The E63 S Wagon offers a similar high-performance driving experience but tends to be pricier, while the Panamera Sport Turismo, although sporting a more advanced hybrid powertrain, lacks the RS 6 Avant's overtly aggressive styling and slightly more spacious cargo area.

Strengths of the RS 6 Avant include its remarkable acceleration, a well-appointed and tech-laden interior, and the versatility of its wagon design, which provides ample cargo space compared to sportier sedans. However, its high price point and the firm ride can be drawbacks for those seeking a more comfortable daily driver or more budget-friendly options. Overall, the 2025 RS 6 Avant remains a compelling choice for enthusiasts who demand both performance and practicality from a luxury vehicle.

Porsche’s first electric vehicle, the Taycan, has improved steadily over the years, and this year's model may be the best mass-production performance EV ever. It is not just potent and powerful, it is agile as a cheetah, comfortable on long drives, and as sleek and streamlined as a four-door sport sedan can be.

The five-passenger 2025 Taycan is available as either an asphalt-hugging fastback sedan or a sporty hatchback that offers more cargo room without sacrificing style. It provides supportive front buckets and rear seating that’s surprisingly roomy for two; the middle fifth-seat position is best for stashing coats and small bags. The Taycan is a tech lover's dream with three standard displays, two of them touchscreens, plus optional displays for the front- and rear-seat passengers. Additional features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, Spotify streaming, and four USB ports.

Despite outstanding performance and a low, low stance, the Taycan is surprisingly comfortable thanks to its standard air suspension, now included on the base trim.

The 2025 Taycan gets new batteries that improve range considerably. The base trim with the extended-range battery can travel more than 350 miles, according to a recent real-world test by the automaker (official EPA ratings are not yet available and likely will be lower). The Tesla Model S covers 350 to 400 miles. The Audi e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT share the same EV platform as the Taycan, and if they get the same upgrades for 2025, they should match or slightly beat its range. The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is below the Taycan in range, offering just 270 miles in the electric pony car lineup’s most powerful trim. Most rivals carry lower price tags, and cover more ground on a single battery charge, but none do it with the Taycan’s poise and spirit. And, for 2025, none can charge their batteries faster than the Taycan, which gets boosted DC fast-charging speed.

The Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid shatters the stereotype of the dull station wagon. While its 41-mile electric driving range and excellent fuel economy make it a sensible choice for errands, it truly comes alive on the open road. The plug-in hybrid powertrain boasts a well-hidden secret: 455 horsepower and a blistering 4.3-second 0-60 mph time, rivaling sports cars.

Unassuming looks belie a sport-tuned suspension by Ohlins and Brembo brakes, ensuring the handling matches the surprising straight-line performance. All-wheel drive adds further capability in various conditions.

This disguise extends to the interior. While sporting elements are present, the cabin prioritizes comfort and refinement. Highlights include a crystal gear shifter, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, Google integration, and even an air purification system. A minimalist design philosophy complements the understated exterior.

The V60 Plug-In Hybrid faces limited competition in the fun-to-drive wagon segment. The Audi RS 6 Avant offers superior performance, space, and luxury, but at a significantly higher price point. Volvo's own V60 Cross Country provides a more rugged option for those prioritizing capability over outright speed.
