Sporty handling and standard all-wheel-drive; Well-executed cabin with many amenities; Hatchback has plenty of great cargo space
Some competitors have more rear legroom; Coupe and convertible have small trunks
The Audi A5 is a premium compact car with sportiness and a focus on technology. It's available as a coupe, four-door Sportback, or a sleek convertible. Buyers choose from two turbocharged engines, and all-wheel-drive provides secure handling, no matter the season. The A5's cabin is one of the most elegant in its class. Audi includes wireless Apple CarPlay, heated leather seats, tri-zone climate control, and modern driver safety features.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
The Audi A5 comes in three trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. Depending on standard equipment and body style, pricing ranges from about $42,000-$61,500, before adding options.
The A5 Premium trim includes driver safety technology like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic LED high beams, rain-sensing wipers, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Other notable features are power heated mirrors, fog lamps, leather upholstery, power heated front seats, push-button start, tri-zone climate control, wood trim, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, ten speakers, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
The Premium Plus model adds things like a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, satellite radio, driver's seat memory, and a surround-view camera.
The top-of-the-line Prestige comes with unique LED headlights with Audi Laser Light technology. Other details include ventilated front seats, a navigation system, and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system. Its heads-up display uses a small projector built into the dashboard to show key driving information on the windshield.
Options include a sport suspension and rear-side airbags. Audi provides shoppers with many exterior paint colors and cabin leather choices.
Engine and Performance
One of the great things about all Audi models is their sporty driving character and available Quattro all-wheel-drive, both included in the A5. There are two turbocharged engine options, each connecting to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Audi's front and rear multi-link suspensions are amongst the most agile in the segment, giving the A5 precise cornering with little to no body roll.
Most owners will be happy with the standard 2.0-liter turbo engine that produces 201 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration is brisk, taking about 6.4 seconds to get up to 60 MPH, up to an electronically-limited top track speed of 130 MPH. The EPA estimates fuel economy to be about 28 MPG.
For those wanting more performance driving abilities without sacrificing comfort, there is a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine available. It generates 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration to 60 MPH takes just 5.4 seconds. Drivers will likely notice slightly lower fuel economy on the highway, with an overall 27 MPG in mixed driving. The engine can achieve nearly as good efficiency as its less-potent sibling by employing a mild-hybrid system. This setup includes an additional power supply that runs the cabin electronics, allowing for less overall reliance on the vehicle's fuel.
Audi recommends premium unleaded fuel.
Interior
Few automakers are as tasteful with their interior style as Audi. The German brand has become the benchmark for cabin quality and design, using high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship to surround occupants in luxury and technology. The A5's interior feels advanced and premium, with soft leather upholstery, decorative wood inlays, and subdued color choices. The elegant dashboard layout is dominated by a 10.1-inch central touchscreen that includes wireless Apple CarPlay, meaning passengers don't need to fuss with any messy cables lying around the cabin.
The A5 is exceptionally user-friendly, with well-labeled physical buttons and dials surrounding the steering wheel along with plush, supportive seats and well-executed styling. On the wheel are controls for cruise control, audio, and hands-free calling, among other settings. Audi also exhibits useful functionality with several storage cubbies located throughout the passenger compartment. There are pockets built into all doors and a center console bin, a couple of small-item trays, and four cupholders.
The A5 doesn't have the roomiest interior in its class, but it's very comfortable and has a sporty snugness. The headroom is sufficient in both rows, and the front legroom is superb. The leg space in the back seat is not as roomy, especially in the two-door body styles. And while the Sportback has a generous cargo capacity, the coupe and convertible have small trunks.
