2021 Audi A7 Review

Overview
Effortlessly balances luxury and sportiness; Elegant cabin packed with high-tech features; Plug-in hybrid engine offers good gas mileage; Concealed hatchback enhances practicality
Not as thrilling to drive as some rivals; Prestige trim level is quite expensive
A luxurious sports sedan with a practical twist, the Audi A7 exhibits all of the German brand's trademark attention to detail and appealing style. Slotting in size between the midsize A6 and flagship A8, the A7 is actually a hatchback, though it's concealed beneath a sleek fastback roofline. Drivers have a choice of two hybrid engines producing up to 362 hp. The A7's interior is outfitted in soft leather, with seamlessly integrated technology.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
Like other Audis, the A7 is available in Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trim levels. Pricing starts around $70,000 for the Premium, which comes with a panoramic sunroof, leather-trimmed seats, an advanced MMI infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, two touchscreens, three zones of climate control, lane-departure warning, 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with automatic high beams, power-folding mirrors, a power liftgate, heated front seats, and driver's seat memory.
Stepping up to the Premium Plus brings the price to roughly $75,000. It includes a Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, a heated steering wheel, an overhead-view camera, and wireless smartphone charging.
At the top of the lineup is the Prestige trim, which comes with the A7's coolest features for around $79,000. It features a head-up display that projects essential driving and navigation data onto the windshield. Other amenities are power closing doors, acoustic glass, laser headlights, heated/cooled front seats, and heated rear seats.
For $1,000, shoppers can spruce up the A7's exterior with the Black Optic Package. It includes black exterior accents, a lowered suspension, and 20-inch titanium-finish wheels.
The available Luxury Package costs about $3,000, enhancing interior comfort with premium leather that extends to the seats, dashboard, and armrests; massaging front seats with several spa programs; passenger-seat memory; and multi-adjustable front headrests.
Engine and Performance
The Audi A7 offers two available powertrains, calling them 55 TFSI and 55 TFSI e Plug-in-Hybrid.
The 55 TFSI is the standard power plant, a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 producing 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It uses mild-hybrid technology to conserve power and fuel, using regenerative braking and an innovative start-stop system to route energy back to an auxiliary battery system. The A7 employs a seven-speed automatic transmission that provides sporty shifts and satisfying acceleration. Providing traction to the ground is an all-wheel-drive system.
Also available is the 55 TFSI e Plug-in-Hybrid. It uses a smaller, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder gas engine, pairing that with an electric motor. Owners can recharge the onboard 14.4-kWh battery at home or a roadside fast-charging station. It gives the A7 better fuel economy, even allowing the large car to drive solely on electricity for short distances.
The EPA estimates overall fuel efficiency for the A7 at 24 mpg, with the Plug-in Hybrid expected to return 29 mpg.
Interior
Simply put, the Audi A7 has one of the best interiors in the segment. It's modern, luxurious, and packed with the latest infotainment technology. Audi clearly took a lot of inspiration from the full-size A8 when penning the interior, with a futuristic dashboard swathed in piano-black trim and genuine wood inlays. Audi's MMI infotainment software is easy to figure out, and it lets the driver tinker with numerous vehicle systems and settings. It's accessible via a gorgeous dual-screen setup, one stacked atop the other in a cascading fashion.
The A7 offers excellent cabin space for front passengers, with standard heated leather seats and available cooling. Buyers get a handful of tasteful interior color choices. Adding the Luxury Package adds Valcona/Milano leather seats, plus premium leather on the dashboard, center console, and armrests.
The back seats also have adequate space, though not quite as much as less sporty competitors. Passengers have a touch-sensitive interface built into the center console's back, allowing those in the rear to set their own temperature. This is also where they operate the seat heaters if the vehicle is so equipped. There are also net-style pockets on the back of the front seats, USB ports, and a folding center armrest.
The A7 has a large cargo capacity of about 13.4 cubic feet. That's roughly the same as the A6 sedan, but the A7 has the benefit of a power liftgate that raises high in the air, allowing better access to hard-to-reach items.
