2022 Audi S4 Review

Overview
The Audi A4 is a compact luxury car beloved for its suave refinement. The S4 is this car's high-performance variant; it adds visceral thrills courtesy of a more muscular powertrain and an upgraded sport suspension. There are different sides to this sedan. It's high-energy when thrill-seeking is on the itinerary, but it's peaceful and calm when you've got more mundane pursuits at hand.
On the downside, the S4 isn't the most potent pick in its class. Rivals such as the BMW M3 and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio have more horsepower. But those comparisons aren't likely to be top of mind when you're behind the wheel of Audi's poised, polished contender.
Exhilarating acceleration. Sporty yet comfortable. Swank cabin.
Not much room for storage in the cabin. Less horsepower than key rivals.
The Audi S4 emphasizes performance without losing sight of comfort, and it has an opulent cabin. However, rival models have the edge in horsepower.
What's New for 2022
Trims and Pricing
The Audi S4 is available in three trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The Prestige trim is the most popular, but it's the Premium trim that earns our recommendation. We'll explain why.
Premium
Pricing for the S4 2.0T begins at $52,945. This trim's standard exterior features include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, fog lights, daytime running lights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power sunroof, and heated power-adjustable side mirrors. The cabin features leather and premium synthetic upholstery, heated 12-way power-adjustable front seats, proximity keyless entry, keyless ignition, multizone climate control, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Additionally, the S4 provides an impressive range of audio and tech features. The list includes a 10-speaker stereo system, Bluetooth connectivity, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration. Safety features such as forward-collision mitigation and lane-keeping assist are standard.
You can upgrade this trim with optional rear cross-traffic alert, satellite radio, a heated steering wheel, and blind-spot monitoring.
Premium Plus
Next is the Premium Plus trim. It starts at $56,545, with the mandatory Premium Plus package included ($3,600). It adds blind-spot monitoring, memory settings for the driver's seat and side mirrors, a surround-view camera, a wireless device charger, a hands-free power liftgate, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, satellite radio, and a heated steering wheel.
The options list includes ventilated front seats, a rear sunshade, and in-car Wi-Fi.
This trim comes with valuable equipment, including blind-spot monitoring, satellite radio, and a wireless device charger. For this reason, we think it will hit the sweet spot for most buyers, and it gets our seal of approval.
Prestige
The range-topping Prestige trim starts at $61,245, with the mandatory Prestige package included ($8,300). This trim provides adaptive cruise control, heated rear seats, a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, a Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, and a head-up display. A rear sunshade is optional.
Engine and Performance
The S4 comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that generates 349 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. That's 88 more horsepower than the top powertrain in the Audi A4's engine range. But the S4 is less potent than the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (505 hp) and BMW M3 (up to 503 hp).
An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. Unfortunately, a manual transmission isn't offered. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard on the M3.
The S4's handling features brisk acceleration, and this car is lively when it matters most. At the same time, the S4 is remarkably well behaved in everyday driving, with smooth, placid handling. It's an ideal balance for a driver seeking a car that's able to wear more than one hat.
Fuel Economy
Interior
The S4's cabin seats five people. The front row is relatively roomy. You get 35.7 inches of second-row legroom, which is a bit more than provided in the BMW M3 (35.6 inches) and Genesis G70 (34.8 inches).
Its cabin design is a high point with this Audi. The interior appears appropriately expensive. A meaty steering wheel sits before the driver, and the sloping dash looks sleek and modern.
The S4 has 12 cubic feet of cargo capacity. That means it has more cargo space than the G70 (10.5 cubic feet) and Volvo S60 (11.6 cubic feet). But the M3 surpasses the S4 in cargo room (13 cubic feet).
Infotainment and Connectivity
The S4's infotainment interface is easy to use. The system is quick to respond and features attractive graphics.
With the S4, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, and a 10-speaker stereo are standard. The list of options includes satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless device charging, a navigation system, and a premium Bang & Olufsen stereo. An optional digital gauge cluster — which Audi calls a Virtual Cockpit — adds modern flair to the cabin.
A 10.1-inch touchscreen is standard. That's a bigger screen than the one in the Genesis G70 and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.
Safety
The 2022 Audi S4 hasn't been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). And it hasn't been evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Keep in mind that these organizations don't typically test high-performance variants such as the S4.
The S4 provides lane-departure warning and forward-collision mitigation as standard equipment. And blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping assist are optional.
Audi S4 vs. the Competition
The Audi S4 isn't a leader in horsepower. The BMW M3 and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio have bigger engines. Still, the S4 carves a place for itself with its premium cabin and well-balanced handling. As a result, it's easily a stellar choice for drivers seeking a high-performance car that gracefully tackles grocery runs and workday commutes.
