2020 BMW 2 Series Review

Overview
Sporty handling; Turbocharged performance; Stylish appearance
Close to 3 Series price, with less practicality
It seems cars nowadays are getting larger, but the BMW 2 Series didn’t get that memo. The premium luxury car expertly blends sports car handling with upscale features, all in a charmingly compact package. Introduced in 2014, the 2 Series is the German manufacturer’s smallest car and comes in coupe, sedan, and convertible variants.
What's New for 2020
Trims and Pricing
The BMW 2 Series comes in two trim levels: 230i and M240i. Both are available with rear- or all-wheel drive, and both are available as a coupe or convertible.
The 230i brings with it exterior features like 17-inch wheels, run-flat tires, fully automatic LED headlights, LED taillights, power-folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers with heated jets, fog lamps, and driver safety aids like lane departure warning and park distance control. Inside, the 230i includes leatherette upholstery, 12-way power front seats, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth, three 12V DC power outlets, a trip computer, and metal/Piano Black interior trim. The coupe retails for about $35,500, while the ragtop comes in at about $41,500.
The M240i starts around $46,000 and $50,500 for the coupe and convertible, respectively, and comes with a larger engine, bigger brakes, an M-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels, a sports instrument cluster, and adaptive cruise control.
Engine and Performance
The 230i employs a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, which generates 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates the 230i Coupe should return 28 mpg combined.
The M240i is the sportier of the two, with a powerful 3.0-liter 6-cylinder turbo. It produces a prodigious 335 horses and 369 lb-ft of torque. The EPA bets this trim will get 24 mpg combined.
Meanwhile, both trim levels are available with rear- or all-wheel drive. While an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is standard, a 6-speed manual is available at no extra cost.
Interior
The 2 Series has a simple and pure interior. All of the driver controls are nicely laid out, ready for fast inputs to the steering wheel, shifter, and pedals. There isn’t any technological clutter to distract from the main focus of driving pleasure, but that doesn’t mean the 2 Series lacks for conveniences. There is standard dual-zone climate control, a premium sound system, lane departure warning, and proximity keyless entry.
BMW was one of the pioneers of placing a dial between the front seats and having that control many of the infotainment features. Many other brands have since caught on, and this controller is easy enough to use in the 2 Series and other models. BMW smartly leaves the HVAC controls as physical controls in the center stack, allowing cabin temperature to be adjusted without needing to scroll through digital menus.
