2022 BMW 2 Series Review

Overview

The BMW 2 Series lineup consists of two distinctly different vehicles: the two-door coupe, which is all-new for 2022, and the four-door Gran Coupe which carries forward unchanged from 2021. Both bodystyles are BMW's entry-level models with starting prices in the mid-$30K range. The 2 Series is far from entry-entry level when it comes to performance. The Gran Coupe is the less-powerful sibling, yet even its base 228i model is quick to accelerate and nimble around town. The newly redesigned 2 Series coupe is more powerful and agile than before, so it delivers the feel of a sports car in a handsome package with rear seats that can be used in a pinch. The Gran Coupe has four doors and slightly more room in back, but it too, is tight for rear passengers. All 2 Series models feature premium interiors and solid build quality. The technology interface is an easy-to-use dash-mounted touchscreen. A digital instrument panel is optional along with a head-up display. Most of the design and materials are pulled from the more-expensive BMW 3 Series lineup, so the 2 Series doesn't display any obvious signs of cost cutting. Direct competitors include the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class which have similar price points but are limited to sedan bodystyles only.

Verdict

An all-new design for the BMW 2 Series coupe gives it a more distinctive look while improving its impressive performance credentials. The carryover 2 Series Gran Coupe four-door remains an acquired taste with its awkward styling. Neither bodystyle provides much room for rear passengers.

What's New for 2022

The BMW 2 Series coupe is all-new this year featuring more powerful engines, distinctive new styling, and a high-quality interior. The 2 Series Gran Coupe received no major changes for 2022. The Dynamic handling package is now available and a few previously available options were removed.

Trims and Pricing

The 2022 BMW 2 Series is available in four trim levels: 228i Gran Coupe, 230i coupe, M235i xDrive Gran Coupe, and the M240i xDrive coupe. The 228i Gran Coupe is the popular model, but we recommend the 230i coupe. We'll explain why.

228i

Starting at $36,695, the 2 Series 228i Gran Coupe is a four-door bodystyle with a 228-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. It comes with 17-inch wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable seats, and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

230i

The 230i is the base trim of the redesigned coupe which starts at $37,345. It includes a 255-hp engine and performance-oriented rear-wheel drive. The interior features are similar to the Gran Coupe, so it has synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable seats, and a user interface with Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatibility. This is our recommended trim as it provides plenty of performance along with attractive styling and a comfortable interior.

M235i

Starting at $46,495, the M235i Gran Coupe is equipped with a 301-hp engine, all-wheel drive, 18-inch wheels, and BMW's M Sport performance brakes and suspension. The interior gets real leather upholstery, a M Sport steering wheel, and sport seats.

M240i

Priced at $49,545, the M240i coupe sits at the top of the lineup. It features a 382-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, launch control, and Sport+ mode in addition to an adaptive suspension, performance brakes, and 19-inch wheels and tires.

Engine and Performance

There are three versions of BMW's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine used in the 2 Series lineup. The 228i Gran Coupe provides 228 horsepower. From there, performance jumps to 255 hp in the 230i coupe and 301 hp in the M235i Gran Coupe. The top-of-the-line M240i coupe gets 382 hp from a turbocharged six-cylinder. All of the engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Performance is exceptional, and even the base 228i delivers strong acceleration and sharp handling. Each successive boost in horsepower brings additional shove in the seat culminating in the M240i which can provide truly quick acceleration. The suspension tuning is on the firm side, especially on the M235i and M240i models, so stick with the base models if all-out performance isn't a priority. There are few coupes in this price range that can match the 2 Series in performance. The Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class both offer similar levels of performance compared to the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

Fuel Economy

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the BMW 228i is estimated to return 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Those numbers drop by 1 mpg when equipped with all-wheel drive. The 230i coupe is even more efficient with EPA estimates of 26/35 mpg city/highway.

Interior

Considering its price tag, the BMW 2 Series is surprisingly plush. Synthetic leather upholstery is standard, but upper trims come with real leather upholstery, wood trim, and ambient lighting. All models provide 10-way power-adjustable front seats with optional lumbar support and heating upgrades. The rear seats are best left for occasional trips and hauling kids as they're tight in both the coupe and four-door Gran Coupe. The rival Audi A3 sedan has more standard features, including heated front seats, leather upholstery, and wood trim.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The BMW 2 Series comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a 6.5-inch display. Navigation, wireless device charging, and an 8.8-inch touchscreen are available. The 8-inch touchscreen and Android Auto are standard in the 228i. A 10.25-inch display, navigation, and wireless device charging are available.

Safety

The 2022 BMW 2 Series has not been evaluated, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) issued the 2021 BMW 2 Series Good ratings in all six crash tests performed. The 2 Series has not been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

All 2 Series models include automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, and a head-up display are available.

BMW 2 Series vs. the Competition

The BMW 2 Series, in either coupe or Gran Coupe form, is a well-rounded performance car that delivers agile handling, strong acceleration, and a premium cabin at a reasonable price. Top competitors include the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class, both of which offer similar price tags and luxurious interiors, but without the sharp-edged feel of the performance-oriented BMW.
