What's New for 2019
Trims and Pricing
Both the coupe and convertible versions of the BMW 6 Series are available in two different trim levels: 640i and 650i. BMW offers the 640i with quite a few standard features, like adaptive sport suspension, 18-inch wheels, automatic and adaptive xenon headlights, LED foglights, headlight washers, automatic wipers, parking sensors, heated and power folding side mirrors, tilt-only sunroof, heated and power adjustable front seats, keyless ignition and entry, driver seat memory, heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, navigation, voice controls, Bluetooth connectivity, iDrive electronics interface, auto-dimming mirrors, automatic climate control, adaptive cruise control, rearview camera and a sound system with nine speakers, CD player, HD radio, satellite radio and an auxiliary input jack. Convertible models come with a glass rear window, power folding soft top and heat reflective leather upholstery.
650i models come with 19-inch wheels and a surround sound system with twelve speakers.
A Driver Assist package comes with optional equipment like blind spot monitoring, side and top view cameras, speed limit information system and lane departure warning. The Executive package adds a power rear sunshade, self-closing doors, ventilated and massaging front seats, ceramic trimmed knobs, leather covered dash, smartphone integration and a head-up display. A Cold Weather package adds a heated steering wheel and a trunk pass-through ski bag. The Lighting package comes with automatic high beams and full LED lighting. The M Sport package comes with a sport steering wheel, either 19 or 20-inch wheels, faux-suede headliner and an aero kit.
Stand-alone options include infrared night vision, automated parking system, roll stabilization, active rear steer, adaptive cruise control and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.
A 6 Series comes with a factory invoice of about $71,000 for a 640i model and an MSRP of about $76,000. The 650i trim level adds about $12,000 to the vehicle’s MSRP. Engine and Performance
Powering the BMW 640i is a 3.0-liter inline six cylinder engine that can produce up to 315 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive come standard. Thanks to an engine start/stop system that shuts off the engine rather than idling, EPA-estimated fuel economy comes in at 23 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg combined.
The 650i comes with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel-drive comes standard, but all-wheel-drive is available as an option. The EPA estimates fuel mileage at 17 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in combined driving.
Interior
As is the case with other top models, BMW offers quite a few different seat colors and interior trim piece options, including a variety of wood grains and even a piano black trim option. Convertible models come with leather upholstery that reflects some of the heat from the sun, meaning you don’t have to sit on a hot seat if you leave the car’s top down during the day. Interior materials all feel like they are of incredible quality and the build quality is impeccable.
A nice feature of the convertible is the quick-folding soft top, which will drop in just 20 seconds. Raising the top only takes a few seconds longer. And the rear glass window slides up and down independent of the roof, meaning it doubles as a wind deflector.
Drivers should appreciate that all of the controls and gauges in the car are angled toward them, including the center stack that is well within arm’s reach. The front seats are incredibly comfortable and occupant space in the front is wonderful. The rear seat area is a completely different story, with relatively flat seatbacks and little leg and headroom, making it suitable for transporting people only a short distance. The trunk is quite large at 12.3 cubic feet, with the space shrinking to 10.6 cubic feet with the car’s top down.
