Trims and Pricing
BMW offers the 8 Series in a single, well-appointed trim: M850i xDrive. It is available as a coupe or convertible. Standard exterior equipment includes fully automatic high beams, BMW Laserlight tech, programmable LED daytime running lights, LED brake lights, power-folding and heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, automatic soft-close doors, rear spoiler, rear window defroster, dual exhaust pipes, 20-inch Cerium grey wheels, run flat tires, and power open/close trunk lid.
The 8 Series comes loaded with comfort and convenience. It’s equipped with Nappa and Merino leather upholstery, 14-way power heated front seats, memory settings, heated armrests, heated M Sport leather steering wheel, Anthracite headliner, Harman Kardon surround sound system with 16 speakers, satellite radio, HD radio, Apple CarPlay, USB ports, a 12.3-inch instrument digital display, 10.25-inch infotainment screen, 20GB media storage, Bluetooth, BMW ConnectedDrive Services, BMW Digital Display Key, real time traffic, navigation, on-street parking availability service, voice controls, BMW Connected App, BMW TeleService, outside temperature display, rearview camera, push-button ignition, vehicle and key memory system, dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable steering column, auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambient lighting, universal garage door opener, Wi-Fi hotspot, two 12V power outlets, and a wireless charging pad.
Safety features includes automatic collision notification, dynamic cruise control, hazard preview system, parking assistant, automated parking sensors, lane departure warning, low tire pressure warning, front and rear curtain airbags, and a surround view camera with 3D technology.
An 8 Series M850i xDrive Coupe comes with an MSRP of $111,900. The Convertible starts at $121,400.
Engine and Performance
Under that curvaceous hood is a 4.4-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo V8 engine. It puts 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque at the driver’s disposal. Mated to the engine is an 8-speed automatic transmission with sport and manual-shift modes, plus paddle shifters and launch control. All-wheel drive is standard.
The EPA estimates the M850i xDrive Coupe should attain 18/25/20 mpg city/highway/combined. Those numbers are roughly the same for the convertible, at 17/26/20 mpg.
Interior
BMW offers six different color options for the leather upholstery in the 8 Series: Ivory White, Night Blue/Black, Tartufo/Black, Fiona Red/Black, Cognac, and Black. That allows for greater customization of the car. Cabin materials are top shelf. The excellent craftsmanship makes this car feel premium in every way imaginable.
There are a surprising number of physical controls on the dash, steering wheel, and center console. This helps, since some people find the infotainment system in BMW’s to have a steep learning curve. The buttons and knobs are fairly large and grouped intuitively, so they’re not difficult to learn.
The seats in the 8 Series are well-contoured and padded, even in the rear. Up to four people can ride in the car at a time, although taller adults won’t fit comfortably in the backseat for more than a short drive. Trunk space is good for this type of vehicle, and the different interior storage compartments are quite ample.
