2020 BMW i8 Review

Overview
Futuristic styling inside and out; Quick and efficient hybrid powertrain; Standard active driver assists
High price brings many competitors; Limited electric-only range
Hybrid vehicles have a stigma of being unexciting, but the BMW i8 shatters that legend. With its sports car looks and advanced interior, the i8 brings exclusivity and passion to a segment that has long emphasized moderation. Fuel economy is better than other sports cars, and it can run 18 miles on electricity alone. All of this comes at a price, though, making the BMW i8 a unique vehicle that will interest fans of exotics and fuel-savers alike.
What's New for 2020
Trims and Pricing
The BMW i8 comes in one trim, available in coupe or convertible form.
Starting at around $147,500 and $163,500, respectively, the i8 Coupe and Convertible have key standard features like an active suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels, summer tires, LED exterior lighting, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding side mirrors, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and front/rear parking sensors.
Interior details include leather upholstery, heated front sport seats, proximity keyless entry, push-button ignition, dual-zone climate control, leather interior trim, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, Bluetooth, an 8.8-inch touchscreen, voice command, navigation, Apple CarPlay, and more.
Engine and Performance
The i8 is powered by a turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine that is located in the rear of the car. It generates 228 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. An electric motor and battery work with the gasoline-powered engine, along with a two-stage automatic transmission. Total powertrain output measures 357 horsepower. BMW says the car can go from 0 to 60 mph in just over four seconds.
Drivers can elect to drive using just the gasoline engine, only the electric motor, or the entire powertrain together. When using just electricity, the car's range is estimated at 18 miles, and the top speed in that mode is limited to 75 mph. Recharging the battery by plugging it into a 240-volt charging station requires an hour and a half.
Interior
The interior of the i8 has a distinctive BMW look that is infused with heavy doses of futuristic styling elements. The overall color scheme is black and beige, giving it a familiar two-tone appearance, but with blue accent pieces that infuse a unique feeling. Given that many people purchase the car out of a concern for the environment, many of the interior materials come from recycled products, yet they still feel like they are of excellent quality. The leather upholstery was treated naturally by applying olive leaves, and the result is that the material is soft and comfortable to sit on.
The driver and front passenger enjoy excellent bolsters that provide padding and hold both people in place during spirited driving. The rear seating is not as comfortable as the front and does not feature enough legroom to accommodate taller adults. A large center console runs down the entire interior, bisecting the front and rear seats while providing excellent storage options and cup holders for everyone.
