2021 BMW M2 Review

Overview
Quick acceleration; Hard to match on a racetrack; Elegant cabin with many features; Practical back seat
Stiff ride over uneven pavement; Costly optional features; Some rivals are more fuel-efficient
A true sports car in every sense, the BMW M2 is a two-door coupe with impressive acceleration and handling. Based on BMW’s small and lightweight 2-Series, the M2 ups the ante with a 405-hp engine and race-inspired technology from the German brand’s M in-house tuning division. Few sports cars offer such a visceral driving experience. Standard driver safety aids help on the commute, though some drivers may find the ride too stiff for everyday use.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
Buying the M2 is simple, with just one trim level offered by the German automaker. The two-door coupe has a classic sports car setup, with a powerful engine under the hood, rear-wheel-drive, and a choice of manual or automatic transmissions.
With a starting price of about $59,000, the M2 includes a suite of driver safety aids to help make commuting less arduous and avoid collisions, with things like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and parking sensors. Other items add extra convenience in changing weather, like rain-sensitive wipers and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Notable performance features are a limited-slip differential for better handling, upgraded brakes, 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in summer tires, and several drive modes. The sleek coupe is adorned in automatic LED headlights, power-folding side mirrors, and a motion-activated trunk. The M2’s leather interior seats four in comfort, with heated front seats, keyless entry/ignition, dual-zone climate control, a Harman Kardon audio system, and touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
As with all BMWs, the M2 is available with a range of additional features to improve its driving performance, technology, and comfort. Top options include curve-adaptive headlights, a sunroof, advanced driver tech like adaptive cruise control, a WiFi hotspot, and wireless phone charging.
Engine and Performance
What makes the BMW M2 such a special car is its twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine, which produces an incredible 405 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. That power output is especially impressive in a vehicle the M2’s size, tipping the scales at 3,600 lbs. The engine runs on premium fuel, which is a consideration for the driver who plans to drive their car daily. It returns an adequate 20 mpg in mixed driving, though some rivals are more thrifty.
Few cars still offer a manual transmission, let alone a sophisticated sports car like the M2, and driving purists will appreciate the standard six-speed shifter. A dual-clutch automatic is also available, and it provides nearly identical speed without the extra effort.
