What's New for 2022
Trims and Pricing
The 2022 BMW M4 is available as a rear-wheel-drive base coupe or as a Competition coupe or convertible with rear- or all-wheel drive. We recommend the Competition model for most shoppers. We'll explain why.
Base
Starting at $71,800, the M4 coupe features a 473-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, a six-speed manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive. Sporty upgrades include an adaptive suspension, performance exhaust, and M Drive modes. The M4 also comes with Merino leather upholstery, aluminum trim, heated front bucket seats, and gray alloy wheels. Drivers can outfit their M4 with a wide range of packages. Performance upgrades include $8,150 M carbon-ceramic brakes and $3,800 M carbon bucket seats.
Competition
The M4 Competition coupe starts at $74,700 while the convertible starts at $86,300. BMW's "xDrive" all-wheel-drive system is standard on the convertible, and it’s a $4,100 option on the coupe. Both come with a 503-hp version of the standard M4's engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Additional features include staggered 19- and 20-inch black wheels, extended dark exterior trim, and "M" seatbelts. We recommend the Competition model in coupe or convertible form due to its higher horsepower engine and standard all-wheel drive. Drivers with deep pockets will enjoy all this version has to offer.
Engine and Performance
The base M4 features a 473-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. The M4 Competition uses the same engine to make 503 hp. Both are lightning-quick with 0-60 mph times of around 4 seconds, according to independent testers. Speed is electronically limited at 155 mph, but a $2,500 M Driver's package boosts it to 180 mph.
A six-speed manual transmission, which is becoming more and more unusual among sports cars today, is standard in the base M4. The M4 Competition comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the base model, but all Competition models get all-wheel drive. The standard adaptive suspension does an excellent job of providing drivers with incredible amounts of grip without sacrificing ride quality. Exceptionally strong brakes and precise steering round out the M4's impressive array of performance hardware.

Safety
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash-tested the BMW M4.
The M4 comes with a long list of standard safety equipment, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, forward-collision warning, driver drowsiness monitoring, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and traffic sign recognition. Buyers can also add parallel and perpendicular park assist, a surround-view parking camera system, and other safety tech, such as traffic jam assist, which manages braking, acceleration, and steering when the car is traveling at low speeds.
BMW M4 vs. the Competition
The BMW M4 stands out from the competition for its well-rounded blend of performance and everyday drivability. The additions of all-wheel drive and a convertible body style offer even more reasons to consider this high-performance two-door. Enthusiast buyers will also want to check out the formidable competitors in this class, such as the Audi RS 5 coupe and Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG, both of which offer similar performance and more traditional styling.
