Overview
Handles like a BMW; Value-driven with plenty of features; Good space and utility
Stiffer ride than some rivals; Some noise at highway speeds
The BMW X1 is a subcompact luxury crossover that's aimed at people who want a sporty driving experience and some utilitarian features. The vehicle was first launched by BMW in the United States market back in 2013. The second generation launched with the 2016 model.
What's New for 2018
Trims and Pricing
BMW makes the X1 in a single trim called xDrive28i. The vehicle comes equipped with 18-inch wheels, a power liftgate, automatic wipers for the windshield, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, driver memory settings, an adjustable steering wheel, premium vinyl upholstery, a 40/20/40 split-folding second row, a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, an iDrive touchpad controller, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, seven speakers, HD radio, a CD player and a USB port. Several optional packages can be chosen by buyers. The Premium package has keyless ignition and entry, adaptive LED headlights, hands-free power liftgate control, a panoramic sunroof, power-folding side mirrors, power lumbar support for the front seats and ambient interior lighting. With the Luxury package, the vehicle gains leather upholstery and wood interior trim pieces. A Technology package bundles together BMW integrated smartphone apps, a navigation system and an 8.8-inch infotainment screen. Performance enthusiasts will like the M Sport package, which includes sportier automatic transmission programming, a sport-tuned suspension, more aerodynamic parts for the exterior, an M Sport steering wheel, paddle shifters, sports front seats and run-flat summer performance tires. Those who want more safety can choose two different Driver Assistance packages. The base package has a rearview camera, parking sensors for the front and rear, plus an automated parallel-parking system. The Plus package adds adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning/mitigation with pedestrian detection, automatic high beam control, lane departure warning and speed limit information. The Cold Weather package includes heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. Buyers can also add seats that slide front and back, plus power-fold for quick cargo area expansion. Upgraded 19-inch wheels are available, as is a Harman Kardon sound system with 12 speakers. An X1 comes with a factory invoice of about $34,000 and an MSRP of about $36,000. When you're a member, you have the assurance that your Certified Dealer will treat you with respect, while providing an upfront price offer that has built-in savings.
Engine and Performance
Interior
In the past, the BMW X1 had a pretty bland interior. That's changed with the new generation, thanks to high-end design and quality materials used throughout. The gauge cluster incorporates two analog gauges, plus a digital screen, while the center stack is simple with few physical switchgear. Overall, the feel of the cabin is luxurious. One of the biggest improvements has to do with space. In the backseat, the legroom, headroom and shoulder room have all been expanded significantly, making it possible to transport larger adults back there. It also makes the vehicle more practical for installing a baby carrier. There's also 27 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, but folding down the seatbacks expands that to 58.7 cubic feet. Before, the cargo capacity was one of the X1's weak points, but now those numbers surpass most competitors. Some people aren't fans of the BMW iDrive interface, especially with the proliferation of touchscreens in cars. The new touchpad allows users to trace out letters and numbers, which makes searching for addresses or other items much easier. The menus are easy to use once you learn the system, but it does take some getting used to.
