What's New for 2019
Trims and Pricing
BMW offers the X2 in three trims: sDrive28i, xDrive28i, and M35i.
Standard features for the sDrive28i include 18-inch Y-spoke light alloy wheels, run-flat tires, LED headlights with cornering lights, LED fog lights, privacy glass, 10-way power-adjustable seats with power side bolsters, driver memory settings, SensaTec upholstery, Anthracite headliner, HiFi sound system with seven speakers, HD radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel, USB port, Bluetooth, BMW TeleService, rearview camera, dynamic cruise control, power tailgate, rear window defroster, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, rear center armrest, ambient lighting, and three 12V power outlets. You also benefit from hill descent control, gas pressure shock absorbers, and vehicle-speed-sensitive power steering. The xDrive28i comes with the same equipment, plus all-wheel drive.
The X2 M35i adds a more powerful motor, sporty exterior accents, 19-inch wheels, an M spoiler, a sport exhaust system, sharper steering, paddle shifters, and more.
An X2 comes with an MSRP of about $36,400 for an sDrive28i and the xDrive28i adds about $2,000 to the MSRP. The sleek and quick M35i bumps the price up to about $46,450.
Engine and Performance
The BMW X2 sDrive28i and xDrive28i both use a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. It’s rated at a maximum 228 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. An eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with Sport and Manual modes is mated to the engine for quick gear transitions. The M35i uses a 2.0-liter turbo four as well, but this one creates 302 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.
The EPA estimates an X2 xDrive28i will return 21/31/25 mpg city/highway/combined, and the M35i should get 23/29/25 mpg.
Interior
With the X2, BMW offers the choice of several different upholstery colors: black, Oyster, Magma Red, and Mocha. Some of those colors are only available with Dakota leather. As people have come to expect from BMW, the X2 features a sumptuous interior, loaded with top-shelf materials, which combine well through exquisite craftsmanship.
Front seat space is good enough for most adults. Unlike most “coupe” crossovers on the market, the X2 has a backseat which doesn’t skimp on legroom or headroom, so most adults can fit back there reasonably well. The front seats themselves are more contoured and feature extra padding, so they’re preferable for longer drives. The cargo area is decent, but the low roofline does negatively impact the space.
BMW does a good job of grouping physical controls according to function. Some of the buttons are a little on the small side, so you might accidentally press the wrong one while driving. The infotainment system is controversial, with some loving how it navigates and others detesting it.
