2023 BMW X2 Review

Overview
Sporty and fun to drive. Comfortable and refined. Youthful exterior design.
Key rivals have more cargo space. Interior is a bit plain. Infotainment system does not support Android Auto.
The BMW X2 stands out among small luxury SUVs with sleek good looks, zippy performance, and a class-leading driving experience.
What's New for 2023
Trims and Pricing
The 2023 BMW X2 is available in just one trim level: 28i. It comes in front-wheel-drive (sDrive) or all-wheel-drive (xDrive) configurations. The xDrive28i is the most popular version, and it is our recommendation for most buyers. We'll explain why.
28i
The front-wheel-drive sDrive28i starts at $37,595 (including a $995 destination fee). Standard equipment includes a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a firm but smooth-riding independent suspension, LED headlights, power-adjustable front seats, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone climate control, an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, a seven-speaker audio system, a power-operated trunk lid, and 18-inch wheels. A premium Harman Kardon audio system, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.
The xDrive28i starts at $39,595. It features BMW's popular xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which we recommend for the additional $2,000. It significantly increases the X2's traction and stability in foul weather. For that reason, the X2 xDrive28i is our pick for most buyers.
Engine and Performance
Fuel Economy
The BMW X2 gets impressive fuel economy. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the sDrive28i will return 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. With its all-wheel-drive system, the xDrive28i is rated 24/31 mpg city/highway.
For comparison, the Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 earns 23/31 mpg city/highway, and the more powerful GLB 35 gets 21/26 mpg city/highway. The Volvo XC40 T5 earns 22/30 mpg city/highway. For ultimate fuel efficiency in this class, consider the Lexus UX Hybrid, rated at 41/38 mpg.
Interior
If you're a fan of simple, attractive cabins, you'll love the interior of the BMW X2. If you're looking for big screens and space-age techno-wizardry, you might be disappointed. We appreciate the X2's simplicity. Its dashboard is modern and clean, with physical buttons for audio and climate settings. The X2's front seats are extremely comfortable, and premium Dakota leather is available. Overall quality is high. Despite the X2's tight dimensions, it offers good seating space in both rows. And the X2 has more rear-seat legroom than the Lexus UX and Audi Q3. Its sloped roofline affects backseat headroom slightly. The boxier BMW X1 is a better option for tall passengers.
The X2 also has a bit less cargo space than the X1. It provides 21.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seat and 50.1 cubic feet with its rear seat folded down. That's about the same amount of cargo space as the Q3 and Volvo XC40. The larger Genesis GV70 offers more.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Safety
The 2023 BMW X2 has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The nearly identical 2022 X2 was tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which gave it top Good ratings in all six crash tests.
Many of the latest driver aids are standard on the X2, including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning. Adaptive cruise control is available.
BMW X2 vs. the Competition
The BMW X2 is a great-looking little SUV that's fun to drive, fuel-efficient, and versatile. It also provides comfortable seating for a small family. The Genesis GV70 has a larger, fancier cabin. The Lexus UX Hybrid is more fuel-efficient, and the Audi Q3 is more affordable. But the X2 stands out in its crowded and competitive class because of its attractive design and memorable driving experience. Buyers looking for a practical and luxurious small SUV that performs like a sports sedan will appreciate the BMW X2.
