2021 BMW X3 M Review

Overview
Accelerates and maneuvers like a sports car; Spacious interior for families and cargo; Prodigious all-weather driving capabilities
Stiff ride impacts appeal as an everyday driver; High starting price spirals with costly options
The BMW X3 M takes the compact X3 luxury SUV and transforms it into a high-performance machine. Its 473-hp engine and sport suspension give the X3 M better acceleration and handling than many sports cars. Yet, it comes with a spacious cabin, excellent outward visibility, and a suite of driver safety aids. The elegant styling doesn’t draw attention to itself, and the BMW’s standard all-wheel-drive makes it a superb four-season vehicle.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
As the high-performance variant of the BMW X3 luxury SUV, the X3 M model comes in just one well-equipped trim level. It retails from about $70,000 and includes driver safety features like forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors.
The LED headlights have automatic high beams. Fog lamps, rain-sensing wipers, and all-wheel-drive are there to assist in lousy weather. BMW includes a motion-activated power liftgate.
The cabin has soft leather upholstery, 14-way heated front seats, and driver’s seat memory settings. The split-folding rear seat allows for extra versatility. The driver can open the doors and turn on the vehicle without taking the key from their pocket. The X3 M also comes with three zones of climate control, including settings for the back-seat passengers.
Carbon fiber and leatherette accent the interior. Tech features include a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, Bluetooth, a CD player, satellite radio, a 10.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and a wireless internet hotspot.
On top of the standard equipment, the X3 M offers many desirable options. The most notable is the Competition Package, which includes an extra 30 hp, a sport exhaust system, black exterior accents, sport seats, and upgraded leather. Another option, the Executive Package, adds amenities like a heated steering wheel, motion controls, a panoramic sunroof, automatic parking assistance, and a wireless phone charger.
Engine and Performance
The X3 M has a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, which produces 473 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. Power goes through an eight-speed automatic transmission to an all-wheel-drive system. This powertrain provides rapid acceleration.
The sport suspension uses active dampers to adjust to road conditions. The X3 M has a limited-slip differential that significantly improves grip. The BMW SUV handles and brakes like a sports car, maneuvering through corners with incredible agility.
The EPA estimates fuel economy of 14/19/16 mpg city/highway/combined.
Interior
Like the subdued exterior styling that belies its formidable power, the X3 M’s cabin is another study in restraint. The steering wheel, materials, and controls are straightforward and practical to use. The wheel is one of the many M performance items, with thick bolsters for a more comfortable grip. There are subtle changes from the standard X3, like the seats, which are sportier and have deeper side bolsters for better support.
The infotainment screen can be used by touch or a console-mounted wheel. The latter is large and comfortable to operate. BMW’s other dashboard controls are somewhat small and simple. Unlike some rivals that have sought to digitize everything in the cabin, the X3 M still has physical climate and audio controls. A CD player is also standard, which is rare these days. But the newer tech is included, too, like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and WiFi access. Shoppers can add wireless smartphone charging.
The interior space is excellent. Front passengers have over 41 inches of headroom and nearly as much legroom. The X3 M is comfortable for tall drivers. The rear seat is understandably not quite as roomy, but it still offers people enough space to ride comfortably. Similarly, the cargo area has plenty of space, with 28.7 cubic feet. With the back seat folded, that space expands to an impressive 62.7 cubic feet -- not bad for a compact, performance-oriented SUV.
