2022 BMW X3 Review

Overview
Strong performance and handling. Upscale amenities. Roomy for a compact SUV.
Ride can feel harsh at times. Rivals offer more luxurious interiors.
The BMW X3 delivers the performance of a high-end sport sedan with the utility of an SUV. It's a compelling combination but at a premium price.
What's New for 2022
Trims and Pricing
The BMW X3 is available in two trims: 30i and M40i. BMW calls its standard models with rear-wheel drive "sDrive" while all-wheel-drive models get the "xDrive" moniker. The 30i base model is the most popular trim, and it is also the model we recommend. We'll explain why.
30i
The BMW X3 sDrive30i starts at $44,695 and comes with a 248-horsepower four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but the 30i is also available with all-wheel drive. Tri-zone automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, and push-button start are included. We recommend this trim as it offers the best mix of performance, value, and comfort.
M40i
At $58,795, the more powerful X3 M40i features a 382-hp engine as well as an upgraded suspension, standard all-wheel drive, and more powerful brakes. New this year is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for the M40i's turbocharged inline-six. It also comes with a panoramic moonroof, adaptive headlights, and larger 19-inch wheels for a more functional and imposing profile.

Safety
The BMW X3 earned the highest overall safety rating of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not yet rated the 2022 X3, but it designated the 2021 model as "Good," it's highest rating.
All models come with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic emergency braking. Options include adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, a surround-view parking camera system, adaptive headlights, lane-keep assist, hands-free parallel park assist, and a head-up display.
BMW X3 vs. the Competition
The BMW X3 is a formidable luxury compact SUV that can go toe-to-toe with any of its European rivals. In a competitive class, the X3 stands out for its versatility while maintaining its sport sedan-like edge. For those looking for an interior that exudes luxury, the Mercedes-Benz GLC has a more polished look and feel on the inside. If value is a major factor, consider the Acura RDX or the Genesis GV70; both offer similar performance and a long list of standard features.
TrueCar Expert Review Methodology
TrueCar also ranks the best vehicles in each category based on a data-driven methodology. Each vehicle is carefully scored using our in-house rating system, which systematically evaluates every car, SUV, truck, and van. Utilizing ALG industry research, consumer surveys, a team of data scientists and vehicle experts, TrueCar provides a unique and useful outlook to help you find the best vehicle for your driving needs.
