2020 BMW X6 Review

Overview
Coupe styling in an SUV; High-quality leather interior; Standard driver safety tech
Not as practical as X5 model; Compromised rear visibility; Rear seats lack headroom
The BMW X6 is a midsize luxury crossover that provides a sporty design combined with the benefits of a utility. Now in its second generation, the BMW X6 received a full redesign for the 2020 model year. The German automaker specializes in making luxury cars with sporty driving performance, and the X6 has these attributes in spades. Starting around $65,000, it comes with driver safety aids and infotainment tech, as well as a sleek sloped roofline.
What's New for 2020
Trims and Pricing
The BMW X6 is offered in two trim levels: the 40i and the M50i.
The 40i is offered in a rear-wheel-drive sDrive40i model and in the all-wheel-drive xDrive40i model. Both models come well equipped with an inline six-cylinder powertrain producing over 300 horsepower offering strong performance. Loaded with stand features, the X6 features a panoramic roof, sport seats, adaptive full LED headlights, and Live Cockpit Pro as standard. On the inside, drivers will be impressed by the dual 12.3” screens serving as digital gauge cluster and as the main control center of the iDrive infotainment. The sDrive40i starts around $65,000 while the xDrive40i starts around $67,000.
The more powerful trim of the X6 is known as the M50i that features a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine producing over 500 horsepower. In addition to the powertrain, the M50i features impressive performance features like an M Sport differential, upgraded M Sport brakes, an M Sport exhaust system, and a more aggressive aerodynamics package to look the part. For the increased performance, the BMW X6 M50i starts around $81,000.
Engine and Performance
The X6 sDrive40i and xDrive40i are equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with a peak power output of 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy measures 20 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg combined.
The M50i comes with a larger and more powerful turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that produces up to 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy estimates measure 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined.
The sDrive40i comes with rear-wheel-drive while both the xDrive40i and M50i trims come with all-wheel-drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.
Interior
Those familiar with the BMW X5 will notice the front seat area of the X6 seems familiar. Since the X6 is based on the X5, BMW kept the same layout upfront, adding additional padding to the center console and sport seats to accommodate more aggressive driving. Like on the X5, buyers have their choice of seat colors and interior trim materials to give the vehicle a more customized feel. All of the interior materials are of high quality and both fit and finish are as good as it gets.
The overall cabin design is classic and simple, meaning the driver does not have to fumble with a few dozen controls. This is thanks to the iDrive system, which comes with a compact controller and the ability to customize the system’s functions. iDrive is now displayed on a 12.3” center screen that allows the driver full control over the vehicle’s infotainment system.
The X6’s interior diverges greatly from the X5 once you get past the front seats. The backseat area comes with two luxurious bucket seats and a large center console, although the center console can be deleted and a third seat added. Rear headroom is a problem for very tall passengers, although the legroom is excellent.
