2023 BMW XM Review

Overview
Decades ago, when SUVs were a new class of vehicles, the "sport" in SUV referred to outdoor adventures in mud, snow, sand, and rocks. Recently, it's taken on a more traditional high-performance definition. BMW has helped lead this change, and its latest model, the XM, takes it to the next level.
The 2023 BMW XM is a 644-horsepower beast with a plug-in hybrid V8 that is tuned for performance. We expect its potent power and sports car-like handling, but its styling is likely far more polarizing. Its blunt nose, oversized grilles, faceted surfaces, and odd wheels and trim elements are decidedly distinctive. Yes, styling is subjective, but the XM's rival performance SUVs, such as the Aston Martin DBX, Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 63, and Maserati Levante, are more traditionally handsome.
We've yet to drive the XM, but we're confident it will exceed expectations for most buyers. A plug-in hybrid that allows for 30 miles of electric-only propulsion, the new BMW should be a popular choice for drivers looking for a high-performance EV SUV.
Potent hybrid power. Sharp, sporty handling. Distinctive interior design.
Polarizing style. Below-average cargo capacity. High starting price.
The all-new BMW XM is a high-performance powerhouse, but its odd styling and exorbitant price may limit its appeal.
What's New for 2023
Trims and Pricing
The 2023 BMW XM is available in a single trim level with few options. Pricing starts at $159,995 (including a $995 destination fee). Standard highlights include 23-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, rear-wheel steering, a sport-tuned adaptive suspension, a limited-slip differential, power-folding heated mirrors, roof rails, a power-operated liftgate, and soft-close doors.
On the inside, you get four-zone automatic climate control, a digital instrument panel, leather upholstery, heated armrests and steering wheel, heated and cooled cupholders, and massaging, heated, and ventilated front seats. You also get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, BMW Connected services, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a wireless charging pad, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, and a drive recorder that functions like a dash cam.
Options are limited to a premium Bowers & Wilkins audio system, Night Gold exterior trim, upgraded sport brakes, and the M Driver's package that grants a day of high-performance driving instruction at a BMW Performance Center.
Engine and Performance
Powering the 2023 BMW XM is a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 paired with a hybrid-electric motor. Combined output is 644 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque routed through an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard. A forthcoming Label Red model increases power output to 735 hp.
BMW estimates the XM will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, which is quick for any vehicle, but especially a 6,000-pound SUV. That weight could negatively affect handling, but we reserve judgment until we test it this spring.
In addition to the typical sport drive modes, drivers can select Hybrid, Electric, and eControl modes. Hybrid is the default mode and automatically switches between gas and electric propulsion. Electric mode uses only battery power to drive the XM for up to 30 miles. The eControl mode prioritizes battery charging by using the gas engine to drive the vehicle as well as the generator.
By comparison, the Aston Martin DBX makes 697 hp, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 63 produces 603 hp, and the Maserati Levante is rated at 590 hp.
Fuel Economy and Range
Interior
The 2023 BMW XM's cockpit is a simple layout accentuated by a single curved-glass enclosure that holds the digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen. The cabin has a distinctive look and feel, thanks to an unusual seat quilting pattern. It's further accentuated by a few bold color combinations, including a weathered Vintage Coffee leather for the dash and the top of the door panels.
There's ample space for taller adults in front or in the rear seats, but cargo capacity is only about average for such a large SUV. Capacity is limited to 18.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Folding them flat expands that space to 64.3 cubic feet.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Safety
Crash-test results for the 2023 BMW XM are not yet available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Standard safety features include frontal-collision mitigation, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitor, evasive steering assist, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic high beams, a driver attention monitor, and a head-up display. There are no optional safety features.
BMW XM vs. the Competition
Large, ultra-luxurious, high-performance SUVs may not be as rare as you think. The 2023 BMW XM has some serious rivals, including the more opulent Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 63, the smaller Aston Martin DBX, and the sleek Maserati Levante. There are also less expensive alternatives, such as BMW's own X7 and the all-new Range Rover Sport.

The Starting Market Average is a proprietary mathematical calculation based on actual recent transactions. It provides a statistically accurate understanding of what other buyers are paying for the least expensive configuration of this vehicle. Adjustments to the calculation beyond make, model, and trim are normalized based on detailed, anonymized transaction information. This accounts for the fact that most or all recently-sold vehicles included different option combinations. The data underlying the Starting Market Average calculation are filtered for extreme outliers and subjected to a weighted averaging process that considers factors such as the recency of transactions and the timing of data lags. In certain instances, the calculated result is adjusted to take account of abrupt changes in the market that may not yet be fully reflected by recent transaction prices. In all cases where the Starting Market Average is shown there is sufficient sample size and transaction detail to be statistically reliable.
