2024 Chevrolet Camaro Review

Overview
The Chevrolet Camaro might be going away, but it isn't going away quietly. In addition to the varied menu of regular Camaros, for the 2024 model year, there will also be a Collector's Edition version of the top trims. The sixth generation of the sporty car is available as a two-door coupe or two-door convertible. Chevrolet has announced that the Camaro will cease production at the conclusion of the 2024 model year, so it has slimmed down the lineup in typical going-out-of-business style. Gone is last year's four-cylinder engine, but V6s and V8s are still available. Those engines find homes in bodies that are extremely good-looking, but sometimes sacrifice function to form. The car offers a reasonably comfortable interior for front-seat occupants plus a very tight rear seat for two adults. But creature comforts aren't the point; the Camaro is about performance. From the entry-level V6-powered LT on up, the Camaro is a blast to drive.
The Camaro and the Ford Mustang have been going toe-to-toe since the late 1960s. While Ford has unveiled an "all-new" seventh-generation Mustang for 2024, Chevy is saying sayonara to the Camaro. Too bad, as the 2024 Mustang can't come close to matching the 650 horsepower served up in the supercharged Camaro ZL1. Meanwhile, Stellantis has suggested 2024 also will be the last hurrah for the Camaro's other key competitor, the Dodge Challenger, another highly styled two-door with lots of performance cred.
Impressive performance across the lineup. Multiple variations at pleasing prices. Easy-to-use infotainment system.
Tight rear seat. Small trunk. Advanced driver-assist features are limited to higher-priced models.
With V6 and V8 power and rear-wheel drive, the 2024 Chevrolet Camaro seems old-school, but its abilities are top-shelf.
What's New for 2024
Trims and Pricing
The 2024 Chevrolet Camaro is available in seven trim levels: 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, LT1, 1SS, 2SS, and ZL1. The prices shown here are for coupe models. Convertibles are offered for about $6,000 more. The 2LT is the popular model, but we recommend the 1SS. We'll explain why.
1LT
With the demise of the four-cylinder-powered LS, the 1LT, which has a base price of $32,495 (including a $1,395 destination fee), becomes the entry-level Camaro. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, and a power-adjustable driver's seat. There's also a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Power comes from a 3.6-liter V6 engine through a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.
2LT
The 2LT ($34,495) adds more luxury-oriented features, including heated and ventilated leather-covered front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat. Automatic dual-zone climate control is standard.
3LT
The 3LT ($38,495) adds heated and auto-dimming exterior mirrors, a heated steering wheel, and wireless device charging. The 3LT also gets a rearview camera/mirror and a head-up instrument display. Audiophiles will appreciate the premium Bose audio system with nine speakers.
LT1
The 1LT ($40,395) is the lowest-priced Camaro fitted with a V8 engine. Its 6.2-liter V8 pumps out 455 horsepower. A six-speed manual is the standard transmission, while a 10-speed automatic is optional. The LT1 is equipped with 20-inch wheels and Brembo front brakes.
1SS
Priced at $43,895, the 1SS is more performance-oriented than the LT1 yet has similar creature comforts. It adds Brembo rear brakes and a rear spoiler, as well as a larger 8-inch touchscreen. We recommend this model because of its low cost-per-horsepower and worthwhile performance features.
2SS
The 2SS ($48,895) is the luxury-performance model. It features the 6.2-liter V8 engine and the SS performance equipment, plus a heated steering wheel and heated leather front seats. Electronic safety equipment includes a blind-spot monitor and parking sensors. Navigation is available. As with the 1SS, a dual-mode exhaust system and magnetic adjustable suspension are optional.
ZL1
Starting at $73,695, the ZL1 is a race car you can spec out and buy from your local Chevy dealer. Its 650-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V8 is mated to a standard six-speed manual or optional 10-speed automatic. Oversized front and rear Brembo brakes are included. To stand up to the rigors of the racetrack, it offers a heavy-duty cooling system and Recaro heated and ventilated racing-style seats. It also has convenience features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Chevy equips it with an array of electronic safety and driver's aids.
Engine and Performance
The 2024 Chevrolet Camaro's engine choices are trim-dependent. The base engine is the LT's 335-hp 3.6-liter V6 teamed with a standard six-speed manual transmission. (Most buyers choose the optional 10-speed automatic.) The LT1, 1SS, and 2SS trims are equipped with a normally aspirated 455-hp 6.2-liter V8. A six-speed manual is the standard transmission, with a 10-speed automatic optional. While 455 hp is plenty potent, the Camaro ZL1 is fitted with a 650-hp supercharged version of the 6.2-liter V8 engine. A six-speed manual is standard, and a 10-speed automatic is optional.
In comparison, the lowest priced Ford Mustang EcoBoost is powered by a 315-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. The recently redesigned 2024 Mustang offers two 5.0-liter V8 engines, delivering 480 and 500 hp.
The Camaro’s 3.6-liter V6 delivers a good dose of horsepower, but its torque production is less impressive. That’s why we recommend the V8-powered trims. The 6.2-liter Camaros can go head-to-head with most Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang models, especially on road courses where their excellent handling gives them an advantage.
Fuel Economy
The 2024 Chevrolet Camaro's fuel economy is expected to be typical of performance cars in its class. The Environmental Protection Agency has yet to publish 2024 Camaro mileage figures, but they will likely mimic the 2023 numbers. A 2023 Camaro with the 3.6-liter V6 is rated at 19/28 mpg city/highway, while those with the normally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine get 16/26 mpg city/highway. The supercharged 6.2-liter V8-equipped ZL1 is estimated to return 14/20 mpg.
The 2024 Ford Mustang with the base turbo four-cylinder delivers an excellent 22/33 mpg city/highway. With the 5.0-liter V8 and 10-speed automatic, the 2024 Mustang is rated at 15/24 mpg city/highway. That drops to 14/23 mpg with the six-speed manual.
Interior
Sporty cars like the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang are designed to provide excellent accommodations for front-seat occupants, while the rear seats are intended for young children, dogs, or grocery bags. The larger Dodge Challenger has a much more accommodating rear seat, so take note if you regularly transport more than two adults. The Camaro's front seats are multi-adjustable, supportive, and comfortable. The cabin has plenty of headroom and space for hips, shoulders, and legs. Not so in back. The driving position is good, but taller drivers might feel they are looking down and out through the windshield. Those who have become accustomed to SUVs might find the visibility disconcerting at first.
Across the lineup, the Camaro's interior is attractive, though it does show its age with relatively small display screens. The well-designed dashboard conveys a lot of information, but it pales in comparison to the 12.4-inch digital display in the 2024 Mustang. On the plus side, a head-up display available on upper trims is a useful feature unavailable on the Ford. Regarding upholstery and trim, the 1LT and 1SS are modestly equipped with cloth seats and rather plain interiors. The more expensive trims are more attractive and use leather and other high-quality materials.
Essentially designed for two people, the Camaro doesn't offer much trunk space. The coupe's 9.1 cubic-foot trunk is ludicrously small, and the convertible's is even smaller at 7.3 cubic feet. Comparatively, the Mustang coupe's 13.3 cubic feet of trunk space seems large, and the Challenger's 16.2-cubic-foot trunk gigantic.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Safety
The 2024 Chevrolet Camaro delivers very good overall safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) gave it a top five-star rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hasn't rated the 2024 Camaro, but it issued the 2023 model a top Good rating in four of the five crashworthiness categories.
The Camaro offers several active safety and driver-assist features, though many are connected to specific trim levels. Head-up display, forward-collision alert, rear park assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change alert with blind-spot alert are standard on 3LT, 2SS, and ZL1 trim levels.
Chevrolet Camaro vs. the Competition
It is difficult to watch the Chevrolet Camaro drive off into the sunset. One of an ever-smaller group of affordable American performance cars, it offers the average consumer the opportunity to taste genuine performance driving. At the same time, it fulfills most duties as a day-to-day commuter — just don't take the whole carpool with you. The ZL1 Camaro rivals the vaunted Chevrolet Corvette in terms of all-around performance. The V8-powered SS trims give today's buyers a whiff of what muscle cars were like in the 1960s and early 1970s. The continuing popularity of crossover SUVs, plus the new wave of electric vehicles, has shoved the fabled Camaro to the edge of doom. Still, the 2024 Camaro gives buyers a bargain-priced avenue to inspiring levels of vehicle performance. The Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger are suitable rivals. No import manufacturer builds anything like them. If you'd like a piece of the past as your future, the 2024 Chevrolet Camaro could be the right car for you.

The Starting Market Average is a proprietary mathematical calculation based on actual recent transactions. It provides a statistically accurate understanding of what other buyers are paying for the least expensive configuration of this vehicle. Adjustments to the calculation beyond make, model, and trim are normalized based on detailed, anonymized transaction information. This accounts for the fact that most or all recently-sold vehicles included different option combinations. The data underlying the Starting Market Average calculation are filtered for extreme outliers and subjected to a weighted averaging process that considers factors such as the recency of transactions and the timing of data lags. In certain instances, the calculated result is adjusted to take account of abrupt changes in the market that may not yet be fully reflected by recent transaction prices. In all cases where the Starting Market Average is shown there is sufficient sample size and transaction detail to be statistically reliable.
