What's New for 2025

For 2024, the Express Cargo Van is available in two platforms, 2500 and 3500. The 3500 comes with a higher payload rating, but the models are otherwise the same. Though the Express can be had with an extended wheelbase, Chevy doesn't offer different roof heights and body sizes like some rivals.

Prices for the Express start at around $43,000 for the 2500 and $46,000 for the 3500.

Standard features include a full-size spare tire, daytime running lights, power side mirrors, power door locks, air conditioning, a backup camera, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and vinyl upholstery.

Options for the Express include remote keyless entry, a sliding side door, OnStar, second-row seats, a leather steering wheel, and remote engine start.

Chevrolet offers three engine choices for the Express Cargo Van. By default, all models come standard with Chevy's 4.3-liter V6, which produces 276 horsepower. Also available are an 181-hp diesel and a 401-hp V8.

The Express comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available on the Ford Transit Cargo Van and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van, but it's not offered with the Express.

The Express excels in towing, besting the competition with an enormous 10,000 pounds of towing capacity. That's more than some full-size pickup trucks.

Step inside the Chevrolet Express, and you'll find a cabin that's undeniably dated but highly spacious and straightforward to use. The minimal controls are easy to navigate, and the vinyl-covered seats provide comfort with a commanding view of the road.

The Express's interior has seen little change over the past three decades, reflecting its outdated design. Standard features include power door locks, manual air conditioning, and power-adjustable side mirrors. However, unlike many competitors, the Express lacks options like automatic climate control, leather or leatherette upholstery, and heated seats.

Where the Express excels is in its cargo capabilities, offering up to 284 cubic feet of space for transporting a wide range of goods. The cargo area can be customized with storage racks, cabinets, and other fixtures from Chevrolet's extensive selection of upfit options, making it a versatile choice for various hauling needs.

Much like its interior, the technology in the Express has seen little change since its debut nearly 30 years ago. While it does offer a Wi-Fi hotspot, in-cabin tech is otherwise minimal. The Express, along with its corporate sibling, the GMC Savana, is one of the few models in its segment that doesn't offer a touchscreen infotainment system. Popular features like navigation and wireless smartphone charging are also absent.

The standard four-speaker audio system includes a radio and Bluetooth hands-free calling, but lacks Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a CD player. An upgraded six-speaker system is available.

The 2024 Chevrolet Express Cargo Van has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This is the case with other full-size cargo vans as well.

As for safety technology, little comes standard with the Express. Besides a backup camera, the Express makes use of technology similar to that of previous eras. Chevrolet offers some modern driver-assistance features as options, including forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, and lane-departure warning. Lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera are unavailable.

The Chevrolet Express Cargo Van stands out as one of the toughest in its class, known for its impressive towing capabilities and reliability. However, many top competitors surpass the aging Express in comfort, technology, and versatility. The Ram ProMaster Cargo Van offers a more modern cabin design and a wide range of options for body length, roof height, and cargo configurations. The Ford Transit Cargo Van leads the segment with refined powertrains and excellent available driver safety features. For those seeking luxury and off-road capability, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van is the top choice in its class.
