Chevrolet makes the Express Cargo Van in three trim levels or load ratings: 1500, 2500 and 3500. 1500 models come with the standard wheelbase of 135 inches, while 2500 and 3500 models can have an optional extended wheelbase of 155 inches. All trim levels come with the same list of standard equipment: 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, 60/40 split passenger’s side doors, trip computer and vinyl upholstery. There are quite a few options you can get on any of the trim levels. These include heated and power-adjustable side mirrors, 60/40 split driver’s side doors, 17-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, towing package, power-adjustable driver’s seat, cloth upholstery, cruise control, power windows, power locks, passenger seat delete, remote ignition, Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar and a sound system with two speakers and USB interface. Buyers can also order the van with a number of window and door configurations. An Express Cargo Van comes with a factory invoice of about $25,500 for a 1500 model and an MSRP of about $26,800. The 2500 adds about $2,000 to the vehicle’s MSRP and the 3500 adds another $3,000. Chevrolet offers the Express Cargo Van with six different engine options. The smallest, which comes standard on the 1500, is a 4.3-liter V6 that puts out 195 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is estimated at 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. The standard engine on all-wheel-drive 1500 models is a 5.3-liter V8 that makes 310 horsepower and 334 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy estimates are 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. 2500 and 3500 models come with a standard 4.8-liter V8 that puts out 280 horsepower and 296 pound-feet of torque. There is also an optional 6.0-liter V8 produces 323 horsepower and 373 pound-feet of torque. Another 6.0-liter V8 that runs on compressed natural gas produces 279 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. The final engine option is a 6.6 liter turbo diesel V8 that pumps out 260 horsepower and 525 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission comes with the V6, 4.8-liter V8 and 5.3-liter V8 engines. A six-speed automatic transmission comes with 6.0-liter V8 and 6.6-liter turbo diesel V8.

On the inside, the Chevrolet Express Cargo Van comes with a dark grey interior. The dash and trim pieces are made of unapologetic hard plastic that actually feels quite durable. Drivers can easily read the large gauges and use the controls, which are fairly simple and straightforward. The seats are also very no-nonsense, although they are reasonably comfortable to sit in for longer drives. The cargo space can be easily accessed through the fold-out side doors, with the optional driver’s side doors a big plus for professionals who must access the rear of the vehicle regularly. Bare sheet metal is exposed throughout the rear, meaning there is little to dampen the road noise when you get on the highway. But the Express Cargo Van is a thing of utility, like a tool, which is why the 204 cubic feet of cargo space in regular wheelbase is quite necessary. Extended wheelbase models come with even more cargo space to the tune of 237 cubic feet. There are plenty of points where you can attach shelving, racks or whatever else you need to transport all kinds of equipment and supplies in the back of the van. Even though the van comes bare bones, optional electronic equipment bring some major conveniences and creature comforts that make driving or riding inside a more pleasant experience. These features include the navigation system, which is reasonably easy to use and even includes turn-by-turn directions. Bluetooth connectivity means the driver can talk on the phone while keeping both hands on the steering wheel. You can also get satellite radio and mobile WiFi to further add to the modern conveniences.
