2021 Chevrolet Express Cargo Van Review

Overview
Excellent payload and towing capacities; Ready for demanding jobs; Comfortable seats for long trips; Configurable cargo area
Not as fuel-efficient as rivals; Truck-like handling; Few infotainment features; A tall roof is unavailable
Chevrolet’s long-running Express Cargo Van has remained mostly unchanged for over 25 years, but its traditional platform and powerful engine choices keep it competitive against newer rivals. Available in regular and extended-length wheelbases, the Express can hold up to 284.4 cubic feet of cargo. Its heavy-duty frame provides a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 lbs -- more than some pickup trucks. Some competitors are more economical and refined.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
The Express Cargo Van comes in essentially one level of equipment. Chevrolet also provides shoppers with a choice of 2500 or 3500 heavy-duty platforms, as well as standard or extended-length body styles. Unlike some rivals, a tall roof option nor all-wheel-drive is available for the Express.
Pricing starts around $33,000 for the 2500 standard wheelbase, with the MSRP rising to approximately $37,000 for an extended-body 3500. Customers get all of the features they expect from a full-size commercial vehicle, with a powerful V6 gas engine, an automatic transmission, four-wheel-disc brakes, steel wheels, and a full-size spare tire. And though the Express keeps its standard features list simple and straightforward, it still includes a few comforts to help keep the daily drive endurable. These include a backup camera, an alarm, vinyl upholstery, power controls, air conditioning, a WiFi hotspot, an AM/FM two-speaker audio system, and a household-style power outlet.
The Express has a configurable interior, making it an excellent choice for a range of business needs. The standard two seats can be increased to five, and a swing-out passenger-side door can be replaced with a sliding door. Chevrolet offers a few safety aids for the Express, like rear parking sensors, OnStar emergency services, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning.
Other options for the Express include glass side and rear cargo doors, additional security equipment, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth, remote keyless entry, and remote vehicle start.
Engine and Performance
Chevrolet’s full-size cargo van comes standard with a 4.3-liter V6 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is a fairly traditional setup, smooth but not particularly fuel-efficient. The powertrain is mated to rear-wheel-drive and produces 276 hp and 298 lb-ft of torque, which are excellent for a base engine.
Stepping up to the 2.8-liter Duramax turbo-diesel improves fuel economy somewhat. Towing power is also increased, to 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.
Chevrolet also offers a large 6.6-liter gas V8 that it shares with the Silverado pickup truck. It links up to a six-speed automatic transmission, producing 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. It gives the Express good acceleration and excellent hauling power. Still, its efficiency lags the competition.
Interior
The Express Cargo Van has not changed much in a quarter-century of production, and this shows in its outdated cabin design. The Express feels like Chevrolet trucks of old, with a plain style and a lot of plastic. It seems to hold up well to punishment, fit for harsh work environments. A few standard features are fitted to the instrument panel, like an AM/FM radio, single-zone air conditioning, and power outlets. The seats are quite comfortable, with excellent padding for long trips. Vinyl is standard, and custom vinyl or cloth is available in neutral tones that nicely hide dirt and other work-related debris.
The rear cargo area is vast and clear of obstacles, with a low loading floor for easy access. It holds a large number of items, and customers can equip racks and cabinets to meet more specific work needs. While an extended-wheelbase is available, a tall roof option is not, so standing inside the vehicle is cramped. This may inhibit its usefulness as a work vehicle.
Chevrolet includes six standard D-rings for holding down cargo. Rear air conditioning and enhanced lighting packages are available.
