What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD sits between the light-duty Silverado 1500 and the stronger (but more expensive) 3500HD. Most shoppers will find the 2500HD's capabilities more than enough for virtually any job that comes their way. It's available in regular, extended, and crew cab body styles, with a standard or long cargo box. Rear-wheel-drive is standard; rugged four-wheel-drive is optional across the lineup.
Pricing begins around $35,000 for the base Work Truck trim. It has all the things needed for a busy workday, like steel wheels, matte black bumpers, four-wheel disc brakes, a full-size spare tire, a back-up camera, automatic locking rear differential, and a tow hitch. Interior details include vinyl upholstery, manual air conditioning, floor mats, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth hands-free calling, a USB port, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
The Custom adds upscale style and features for roughly $40,000. It gets body-colored trim details, 20-inch alloy wheels, heated power side mirrors, LED tail lamps, cloth seats, remote keyless entry, and cruise control.
For about $39,000, the LT gains more exterior chrome accents, an EZ Lift tailgate, 17-inch wheels, a WiFi hotspot, and a multifunction steering wheel.
The LTZ retails for around $49,500. It adds an alarm system, LED headlights, fog lamps, chrome side mirrors, power-folding memory mirrors, leather upholstery, 10-way power heated front seats, driver's seat memory, remote engine start, tri-zone climate control, a heated leather steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a household-style power outlet, satellite radio, HD Radio, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, and voice-activated infotainment features.
The top-of-the-line High Country trim starts from about $62,500. Notable features include western interior styling, wireless phone charging, a navigation system, a Bose premium audio system, a universal garage door opener, heated/cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a power tailgate, front and rear ultrasonic parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Available technology includes extensive equipment to make trailering easier. Large trailering mirrors come standard. The Silverado 2500HD offers up to fifteen different camera views. Chevrolet has a technology called "transparent trailer view," which comes with a camera for attaching to the trailer itself. It can make backing up and other complicated maneuvers much more manageable. Other available technology includes an integrated trailer brake controller, a trailer sway control mode, and an automatic braking system for going down steep grades. Hitch Guidance and an Advanced Trailering System are standard on the LTZ and High Country trims and optional on the LT.
Advanced driver safety features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors are available or standard on all trims. Top trim levels also have access to active safety systems like forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. Other desirable options include an off-road suspension, smoked-amber roof marker LED lights, a 15-inch diagonal head-up display, and a snow plow prep/camper package.
Engine and Performance
The Silverado 2500HD gets its power from a 6.6-liter V8 gas engine that produces 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. It connects to a six-speed automatic transmission. The maximum payload capacity is 3,979 pounds, with a towing capacity of up to 14,500 pounds. Adding a fifth-wheel/gooseneck adapter allows for towing of up to 17,370 pounds.
There's another 6.6-liter V8 available, in the form of a Duramax turbo-diesel engine, producing 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. It connects to a 10-speed automatic. Maximum payload and towing are 3,715 pounds and 18,500 pounds, respectively.
Interior
Chevrolet builds some of the roomiest, most functional interiors of any truck brand, and the Silverado 2500HD has tons of practical details. It has among the best headroom in its class, giving the cabin an open and airy feeling. There are dual glove compartments, one of which locks, and there's a massive center console bin that's perfect for snacks, hand tools, and other small items. It even has a tray built into the top meant for a smartphone. The doors have deep wells for holding bottles and other things, and there are a few trays at the bottom of the tall center stack.
The dashboard is not the fanciest in its class, but it works well, with a 7.0-inch touchscreen, centrally located for easy access. Chevrolet's infotainment system is intuitive, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Optional tech includes Bose premium audio, wireless smartphone connectivity, a navigation system, and numerous helpful trailering walk-throughs. A massive 15-inch head-up display is also available, which can project vital driving information onto the windshield.
Vinyl upholstery comes standard on the base Work Truck, while upper trims have cloth or leather. The LTZ has heated seats with driver's seat memory, while the High Country adds front-seat ventilation and rear heated seats.
