2019 Chevrolet Volt Review

Overview
Straightforward infotainment system; Smooth engine with superb fuel economy; Quiet and comfortable interior
Rear seat space is somewhat cramped; Aerodynamic design impacts rear visibility
Some people want the benefits of an electric car, but they don’t have convenient access to a charging station. For them, the Chevrolet Volt is an excellent option. It comes with dual electric motors and a large battery, which enable it to drive 53 miles on a single charge. A backup gasoline engine keeps the battery charged and is there in case a stop at the gas pump is needed. In hybrid mode, the Volt gets 42 mpg combined, according to the EPA.

Trims and Pricing
Two trim levels are available for the Chevrolet Volt: LT and Premier. On the exterior, the LT has 17-inch alloy wheels, LED taillights and headlights, remote start and keyless entry. The interior includes keyless ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, automatic climate control, an 8-inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar, 4G mobile WiFi, Apple CarPlay compatibility, two USB ports, six speakers and an auxiliary audio input jack. Buyers can opt for the Comfort package for the Volt LT. It comes with front seat heaters, heated side mirrors and a heated steering wheel. Leather upholstery can be added as an option for the package. The only stand-alone option for the LT is a Bose sound system with eight speakers. The Volt Premier comes with the same standard equipment, plus all of the options available for the LT. An auto-dimming rearview mirror is also included, as are heated outboard rear seats, an automated parking system and a wireless charger pad. With the optional Driver Confidence package, the Volt Premier gains lane departure warning, bling spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. Buyers can add the Driver Confidence 2 package on top of the other, which adds a lane keeping assist, forward collision alert with automatic braking feature and adaptive headlights. A navigation system can be added as the only stand-alone option for the Premier. A Volt comes with a factory invoice of about $38,000 for an LT model and an MSRP of about $39,000. The Premier trim level adds about $3,200 to the vehicle’s MSRP. Since you're a member, your Certified Dealer will provide you with an upfront price, which translates into guaranteed savings.
Engine and Performance
The plug-in hybrid powertrain features two electric motors that sit on the two axles. An 18.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack feeds power, which is replenished partly by the onboard combustion engine or completely by plugging the car in. The electric motors combine with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine. While the 1.5-liter engine usually works as a generator for the battery, but sometimes when needed it can help propel the car forward. Recharging the car can be done with a 120-volt power outlet like those found commonly in a home. Even better is a 240-volt charging station, making it a faster process at about 4.5 hours versus 13 hours.
Interior
Among the many changes instituted for the Volt's second generation is an interior that's decidedly more modern. It has a largely black color scheme, with some silver accents. The gauge cluster is completely digital, feeding the driver with critical information as needed. At the top of the center stack are the infotainment controls, including a large screen that's easy to read. The bottom of the center stack contains common physical controls. Plenty of swooping lines across the dash and other surfaces make the interior feel large. While the design is captivating, Chevrolet uses plenty of hard plastics and other low-end materials, but craftsmanship is excellent. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, plus there's plenty of space. The backseat can fit up to three people, making the Volt more practical. Cargo space measures about 10.6 cubic feet, which is easy to reach through the rear hatchback.
