Trims and Pricing
Ford offers the Focus in three different trim levels: S, SE and Titanium. S models come only as the sedan and standard features like keyless entry, air conditioning, 15-inch steel wheels, power locks, power mirrors, power front windows, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, driver’s seat height adjustment and a sound system with four speakers, CD player and auxiliary jack. SE models come both as the sedan and hatchback. Standard equipment includes automatic headlights, cruise control, 16-inch steel wheels, trip computer, power rear windows, voice controls through Sync and audio controls mounted on the steering wheel. Hatchback models come with a 60/40 split rear seat and a removable cargo cover. Ford also offers some optional packages for the SE. An Appearance package comes with rear disc brakes, 17-inch alloy wheels, ambient interior lighting, automatic transmission, foglights, leather upholstery, power adjustable driver’s seat, satellite radio and a rear seat center armrest. The Winter package adds heated side mirrors and heated front seats. An SFE or super fuel economy package is also available on the SE. It comes with aerodynamic wheel covers, rear disc brakes, rear spoiler and low rolling resistance tires. The final package for the SE is a MyFord Touch package which comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control and a Sony sound system with ten speakers. Top-of-the-line Titanium models come with all of the standard features found on the SE, plus the Appearance, Cold Weather and MyFord Touch packages. Additional standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, upgraded trim on the car’s interior and exterior, keyless entry and ignition and a backup camera. An optional Handling package adds 18-inch alloy wheels, summer tires, full-size spare tire and a sport tuned suspension. Other optional equipment includes a sunroof, automatic parallel parking system and navigation system. A Focus comes with a factory invoice of about $16,500 for an S model and an MSRP of about $17,000. The SE trim level adds about $2,000 to the vehicle’s MSRP while the Titanium adds yet another $5,000. Remember that your Certified Dealer will give you as a member guaranteed savings and a straightforward price, as well as not being hassled during the sales process.
Engine and Performance
The standard engine for the Ford Focus is a 2.0-liter four cylinder that produces a peak 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard on S and SE models, while a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual is standard on the Titanium and optional on the other trim levels. With the automated manual transmission, EPA fuel mileage estimates come in at 28 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg in combined driving. With the manual transmission fuel mileage estimates drop to 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined. The SFE package increases fuel mileage estimates to 28 mpg city, 40 mpg highway and 33 mpg combined.
Interior
The interior materials of the Ford Focus are the best in its class, hands down. Nothing on the inside of the car feels cheap or budget-oriented. Interior surfaces are a dark grey with optional silver accent pieces to give an elegant look. Gauges and controls are laid out in a modern design, but they are not altogether intuitive. The optional MyFord Touch system can also be difficult to use and make selections, even though you can customize the navigation screen. Interior space is adequate, depending on where you sit. Front passengers have plenty of legroom and headroom, plus the seats are quite comfortable and supportive even during long distance drives. Moving to the backseat, both legroom and headroom become considerably constrained, meaning full grown adults will not fit without considerable body contortions. The sedan comes with 13.2 cubic feet of cargo space, which is about average for a compact sedan. The hatchback comes with 23.8 cubic feet of cargo space, making it the clearly more practical choice. With the rear seats folded down, cargo capacity in the hatchback expands to 44.8 cubic feet.
