Large vehicle size; Infotainment and available technology features are not as current as the competition; Back seat is tight
The Ford Mustang is a two-door sports car that can be had as a coupe or convertible, and is aimed at people who want an affordable performance vehicle. The iconic car was launched back in 1965. The current sixth generation started up with the 2015 model year.
What's New for 2019
Trims and Pricing
The Mustang comes in seven trim levels: EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium, Bullitt, Shelby GT350, and GT350R.
Standard features for the EcoBoost are xenon headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, limited-slip rear differential, LED taillights, blind spot mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, power locks, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, rearview camera, Sync voice controls, 4.2-inch infotainment screen, and a sound system with six speakers, two USB ports, CD player, and auxiliary input jack. Also available as a convertible.
EcoBoost Premium models come with even more standard equipment like 18-inch wheels, chrome interior accents, drive modes, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a sound system with nine speakers, satellite radio, and an 8-inch touchscreen. Available in drop-top form as well.
GT models have the same equipment that is standard on the EcoBoost, plus 18-inch wheels, line-lock, chrome exhaust tips, upgraded brakes, launch control, and hood vents.
The GT Premium's standard features are the same as for the EcoBoost Premium. There’s a ragtop available as well.
The Bullitt model gets exclusive trim accents, 18-inch wheels, summer tires, and a more powerful engine.
The Mustang brings back the Shelby name with the GT350 and track-ready GT350R. They feature special alloy and carbon fiber wheels, respectively, unique paint options, black side mirrors, racing seats, and a significantly restyled interior. Of course, they use a powerful 5.2-liter V8 of their own.
A Mustang comes with an MSRP of about $26,400 for an EcoBoost model and a $31,400 price tag for the EcoBoost Premium. The GT starts at $35,400 and the GT Premium begins around $39,400. Convertible versions are available for about $5,000 more. The Bullitt retails for around $46,600. And the top-shelf Shelby GT350 and 350R models start at about $59,200.
Engine and Performance
EcoBoost models come with a turbo 2.3-liter four cylinder that pushes out 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. GT models come with a beefy 5.0-liter V8 that thunders out 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.
The Bullitt comes with the same 5.0-liter V8, but it has been massaged to produce 480 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The Shelby trims employ a special 5.2-liter V8 that churns out 526 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque.
All models come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. All but the Bullitt and the Shelbys are also available with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The EPA estimates the EcoBoost should return 21/31/25 mpg city/highway/combined, and the GT and Bullitt should do 15/24/18 mpg. Numbers for the convertibles drop slightly. The GT350 gets an estimated 14/21/16 mpg.
Interior
Ford offers a wide array of seat color options for the Mustang, which vary according to trim level and options packages. Some are solid colors, while others feature striping or a two-tone layout that livens up the interior quite a bit. The dash, center console, and door panels are mostly black, except for the trim materials mentioned above.
Overall, the look of the interior features some throwback designs that are married seamlessly to modern elements, making for an overall attractive layout. The steering wheel is soft to grip and features some nice contouring for increased comfort. The gauges and controls are easy to read and understand. The materials Ford has used are better overall than on the previous generation of the Mustang, while overall build quality has also improved.
The interior feels bigger than in the previous generation of the Mustang, thanks to a smaller center console and dashboard. As has been the case in the past, the front seats have plenty of space even for taller adults, while the rear seats are cramped for anyone but kids. For the coupe, there is 13.5 cubic feet of space in the trunk, which is pretty good. The convertible has 11.4 cubic feet of cargo, which is also respectable.
