2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van Review

Overview
Among the small crop of modern work vans, the 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van pulls together comfort, capability, and cost better than any of its peers. It feels more like an SUV from the driver's seat but still delivers immense cargo space and the stout hauling limits expected of today's work vans. Buying one is relatively straightforward: You have a choice of two engines, three body lengths, three roof heights, and three levels of payload capacity.
The Transit Cargo Van offers a standard V6, or a more muscular turbocharged V6 for heavier duty, all sent through a 10-speed automatic transmission. With the available all-wheel drive, the Transit Cargo Van serves as both a wet-weather work van and an off-road adventure vehicle. Its well-sorted suspension smooths out the rough ride of city streets and helps fend off fatiguing highway noise.
And while the basic Transit Cargo Van is indeed basic — vinyl upholstery, no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and a 4-inch touchscreen to control the few features that pass for infotainment — it has a decent set of standard safety features and a comprehensive list of options.
Among the Transit's competitors, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo has similar towing and hauling capacity, offers more configurations, and holds a slight edge in maximum cargo capacity. It comes with select Benz touches (paddle shifters, anyone?) for which you pay handsomely, and dozens of options.
The Ram ProMaster Cargo and Nissan NV Cargo cost less than the Transit, but neither offers all-wheel drive. The Nissan boasts high maximum towing limits but can't handle the same heavy loads as the Ford or Ram. Note that Nissan has discontinued NV production, so you'll need to look on the used market if you want one. Of the two, the ProMaster gives the Transit its toughest challenge.
Strong towing and hauling ability. Quiet and comfortable interior is a notch above work-van expectations. Vast cargo space.
Shortlist of standard features makes the base model a bit pricey. Some rivals offer more options for specific businesses and applications.
The Ford Transit Cargo Van balances cost, comfort, and capability, offering a reasonably priced blank canvas for buyers and businesses. It has vast cargo space, high hauling and towing limits, strong V6 power, and optional all-wheel drive. A van starting at $40,000 should have more standard features, but the Transit's solid list of included driver-assist and safety tech is a nice touch.
What's New for 2022
Trims and Pricing
Instead of conventional trim levels, the 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van comes in three classes — T-150, T-250, and T-350 — that represent payload and hauling capacities (roughly, light-, medium-, and heavy-duty). All come with the same features. There are also three roof heights (low, medium, and high) and three body lengths (regular, long, and extended). The high roof option only comes with long and extended-length bodies.
Pricing for the T-150 starts at $41,665. The T-250 costs $42,615, and the T-350 is $43,865. Standard features include 16-inch steel wheels, side-hinged rear doors that open 180 degrees, a sliding passenger-side door, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry, air conditioning, vinyl floor and upholstery, manually reclining bucket seats, a four-speaker audio system, 4-inch infotainment display, Bluetooth, dual USB ports, and an embedded modem (for fleet tracking and telematics) with WiFi hotspot.
Standard driver-assist features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, hill-start assist, crosswind assist, automatic high beams, and a backup camera with trailer hitch assist.
Several dozen options and packages allow for deep levels of customization. A sampling: HID headlights, dual-battery and alternator setups, switch banks for auxiliary lights and accessories, 253-degree-opening cargo doors, heated and power-adjustable seats, cloth and leather upholstery, "three-across" front seating, Sync 4 infotainment system with a 12-inch touchscreen, navigation, and satellite radio.
Additional driver-assist features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view camera, parking sensors, and a self-parking system. Ford also offers packages to transform the Transit Cargo into an ambulance, RV, parcel delivery van, or overland adventure vehicle.
Engine and Performance
The Transit Cargo Van comes with a 3.5-liter V6 (275 horsepower, 262 pound-feet of torque) paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. An optional turbocharged V6 (310 hp, 400 lb-ft) delivers more muscle for larger jobs. All-wheel drive is also optional.
The Transit ranges from 3,630 to 4,550 pounds of payload capacity and can tow up to 7,500 pounds. The truck-like suspension — independent front struts, rear solid axle, and leaf springs — helps balance the Transit Cargo's dual objectives of robust capacity and relatively compliant ride comfort for long days traveling over rough roads. Ample front and side glass offers excellent visibility.
Fuel Economy
Interior
The Transit Cargo Van feels less like a work van and more like one of Ford's economy crossovers. The dash and door panels aren't brimming with chrome accents or weighted rotary dials, but the Transit is a step above some other competitors with its stylized dash and ample storage nooks. The base vinyl upholstery is utilitarian but still looks good. Dark gray cloth and even leather options are available.
The headroom is decent, but competitors offer more. Legroom is among the best of the bunch, though. The Transit also offers substantial cargo space, ranging from 245 cubic feet in the standard low-roof model to 487 cubic feet in the extra-long version. Removing the front passenger seat adds roughly another 40 cubic feet. Only the Sprinter offers more. Cargo length is similarly impressive, ranging from 10.5 to 14 feet, with 4.5 feet of space available between the wheel wells.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Safety
The 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The Transit Cargo Van comes standard with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, crosswind assist, automatic high beams, and a backup camera with trailer hitch assist. Blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view camera, parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control are also available.
Ford Transit Cargo Van vs. the Competition
The Ford Transit Cargo Van merges the demands of a rugged work truck with the passenger comfort of an SUV. The front cabin's design and materials are a notch above what you'll find in competitors like the Ram ProMaster Cargo and Nissan NV Cargo, although recent updates to the Ram have closed the gap a bit. The Ford also offers all-wheel drive; the Ram and Nissan don't. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo remains the benchmark for cargo vans for its smooth ride, advanced tech, and massive cargo volume. It also offers dozens of configurations. Not surprisingly, it's also the most expensive.
