2021 Ford Transit Passenger Wagon Review

Overview
Smooth and quiet powertrain; Very maneuverable for its size; Standard driver safety features; Easy to configure for work or travel
Lacks rivals' lengthy warranty terms; High starting price; Limited off-road abilities; Few infotainment options
The Ford Transit Passenger Wagon is a commercial-grade vehicle for carrying 10 to 15 people in comfort. It's available in two dozen styles, with different body lengths and heights for your particular needs. Other large transport vans can't match the Transit's smooth and quiet ride, standard safety tech, and agile handling. Ford offers several upfit options for various industries, and removable seats allow it to double as a cargo van.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
Pricing ranges from around $42,000 to $55,000 before adding options. The Transit Passenger Wagon comes in several body styles, like regular and extended-wheelbase, with three different roof heights. It allows you to find a van size that meets your business or recreational needs. Inside the cabin, shoppers can select 10-seat, 12-seat, 15-seat, and other configurations, providing up to five rows for passengers.
Ford builds two trim levels: XL and XLT. Some of the XL's features include four-wheel disc brakes, Hill Start Assist, 16-inch steel wheels, a full-size spare tire, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and power mirrors. The cabin features cloth upholstery, removable bench seats, power controls, keyless entry, air conditioning, an eight-speaker AM/FM audio system, a wireless internet hotspot, Bluetooth, and a 4.0-inch display.
New Transit vans have a suite of active safety technology to help keep the driver and passengers safe during long-distance travel. Forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking help prevent accidents. The vehicle also has a lane-departure warning to alert the driver if the Transit starts to drift from its lane.
Stepping up to the XLT trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. It also comes with adaptive cruise control to help maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Other standard equipment includes parking sensors, fog lights, heated power-folding mirrors, floor mats, and an enhanced infotainment system with voice controls.
Ford provides a great blend of optional amenities to help improve the Transit's cabin comfort and utility. Customers can add all-wheel-drive to handle bad weather better. A Livery Prep Package readies the Transit for limo service, with a power-sliding side door, an anti-pinch feature to avoid injury, privacy glass, and heavier-duty vehicle electrical elements. Extended-range fuel tanks, towing packages, and an eight-inch infotainment system with navigation help make the Transit an ideal highway vehicle.
Engine and Performance
Assembled in the American Midwest, the Ford Transit is powered by the company's popular 3.5-liter V6 engine. It produces 275 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, providing ample power for transporting passengers and cargo. It uses a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive. The EPA estimates fuel economy of 17 mpg in mixed driving.
Heavier-duty styles get power from a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, producing 310 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. It offers quicker acceleration and more hauling strength.
All-wheel-drive is available, as are dual rear wheels. You can swap out the standard 25-gallon fuel tank for an extended-range 31-gallon reservoir.
Interior
The Transit Passenger Wagon has one of the best cabins of any full-size van. It is quiet, refined, and includes a great set of features. Ford offers several seating configurations, with front and rear air conditioning. The headroom ranges from around 40-56.6 inches, depending on the roof height one chooses, giving the cabin an airy environment pleasant for multi-hour travel. Each row of seating behind the driver has about 35.6 inches of legroom, which is quite good. There is excellent cargo space as well.
Like the passenger capacity, the Transit's cargo area depends on the body length and seating configuration. Buyers won't be disappointed, with a minimum of 39.1 cubic feet available. The biggest body style provides 100.5 cubic feet behind the rearmost row, or a staggering 461.9 cubes with all seats removed.
The Transit has an excellent driver layout, with an upright seating position, user-friendly controls, and a well-padded steering wheel. Outward visibility is good out all around. Ford includes several amenities, like A/C, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and in-cabin cubbies for storing beverages and other items.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. That adds tons of multimedia options for long trips. Unfortunately, the base infotainment screen is small and outdated. Stepping up to the optional eight-inch display improves accessibility significantly.
