2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 Review

Overview
Hyundai has fully embraced electrification with hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles. The all-new 2026 Ioniq 9 takes its place at the top of the Hyundai EV model lineup, joining the Ioniq 5 compact crossover and Ioniq 6 premium sedan.
Built on Hyundai's E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), the new Ioniq 9 is the brand's largest EV with seating for up to seven passengers in a roomy, comfortable cabin. While the overall dimensions of the Ioniq 9 are similar to the gas-powered Hyundai Palisade, the electric powertrain allows for a much longer wheelbase, improving interior space and drivability.
The Ioniq 9 will be available with single-motor rear-wheel-drive or dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrains. A Performance version boasting 422 horsepower will also be offered, making it one of Hyundai's most powerful vehicles. Hyundai expects the Ioniq 9 to have a maximum range of 335 miles, with every trim getting at least 300 miles on a charge. Charging from 10% to 80% on a DC fast charger should take about 25 minutes.
With only a handful of three-row electric vehicles available, the Ioniq 9 will be vying for a piece of a rather small pie. Rivals include the Rivian R1S, and the Hyundai’s cousin, the Kia EV9. While the new Volkswagen ID. Buzz also offers three rows of seats, it is more minivan than SUV, so it is an outlier but still could be considered an alternative to the Ioniq 9.
The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 goes into production in the Spring of 2025 at the Korean brand's new facility in Bryan County, Georgia.
Futuristic styling. Spacious interior. Efficient electric powertrain.
Tight third-row legroom. Expected high starting price.
The all-new Hyundai Ioniq 9 delivers three rows of seating with proper SUV utility in a stylish, efficient electric crossover. As the third model in the Korean brand's proven Ioniq lineup of EVs, the new Ioniq 9 should be an ideal choice for the EV buyer who needs family-sized transportation.
What's New for 2026
Trims and Pricing
Battery and Performance
Hyundai will offer the Ioniq 9 in a single-motor rear-wheel-drive model or dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant. Rear-wheel-drive versions get a 215-horsepower electric motor — that's the same output as the rear-wheel-drive Kia EV9, but considerably lower in power compared to the 282-hp rear-wheel-drive Volkswagen ID. Buzz.
Upgrading to the dual-motor system bumps power to 303 hp, while the Performance all-wheel-drive version gets a more powerful motor on the front wheels for a total output of 422 hp. Hyundai says that model can reach 60 mph in 4.9 seconds — quite respectable for a three-row SUV. Either all-wheel-drive powertrain provides up to 5,000 pounds in towing ability, while the single-motor Ioniq 9 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
Range and Charging Time
Providing electric power for the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 is a 110.3 kW battery pack which is expected to deliver a maximum range of around 335 miles. This range is better than the Kia EV9 and Volkswagen ID. Buzz, but can't match the extended range of the Rivian R1S. Hyundai says that even the more powerful dual-motor variants will have a minimum range of 300 miles.
Built on Hyundai's 800-volt E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), the Ioniq 9 can charge at up to 350 kW on a DC fast charger. With this much juice, the big Hyundai can get from a 10% to 80% charge in about 24 minutes.
Interior
The Ioniq 9 may be all new, but its cabin will be familiar to anyone who has been in the current Hyundai Tucson or Hyundai Sonata. Highlighting the dashboard is the curved screen incorporating the 12-inch digital gauge cluster and 12-inch central infotainment display. The ambient lighting appears below and behind the screen, making it appear to be floating on the dashboard. Quality trim is used throughout the cabin with an emphasis on sustainability, making use of materials like Eco Process Leather and Recycled PET fabric.
There's plenty of space to store smaller items around the front seats with a sizable center console, storage at the base of the dashboard, and with the flat floor, there's room for a bag or purse in front of the console. For added flexibility, the entire console can slide forward or back, and the cubby under the armrest is dual-hinged — it can open from the front or rear seat.
Front seats are stylish and comfortable with multiple power adjustments as well as available heating and cooling. Hyundai also offers its Relaxation Seats for first and second-row passengers, who can fully recline with the added comfort of a retractable footrest — an ideal position for waiting while the Ioniq 9 charges.
The second row can be configured as a bench (seven-passenger) or bucket seats (six-passenger), and with either setup, there's plenty of legroom and headroom. The Ioniq 9's 42.8 inches of rear-seat legroom makes it one of the best in the industry, even beating the Chevrolet Suburban. Rear seat heaters are available, and passengers in the second row have their own climate controls as well as multiple USB ports. With the flat floor that carries throughout the cabin, even the middle seat has reasonable space for an adult.
Second-row seats easily fold out of the way for easy access to the third row, and it's relatively easy to climb in and get settled. It's a little cramped with 32 inches of legroom and doesn't come close to the 42.4 inches offered in the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. Second-row seats can slide forward to provide a bit of extra legroom.
The Ioniq 9 serves up plenty of utility with a sizable cargo area. With a large rear hatch for easy access, there is 21.9 cubic feet of space behind the third row. Folding the rear seats flat — an easy task from the rear of the vehicle — the space expands to 46.7 cubic feet, which is slightly more than the Ioniq 9's gas-powered Hyundai Palisade sibling. There's also an additional 3.1 cubic feet of space in the frunk (front trunk) (1.8 cubes on dual-motor variants).
Infotainment and Connectivity
Hyundai boasts one of the more intuitive infotainment systems on the market, and the new Ioniq 9 should share in this success. With its expansive curved screen with the 12-inch infotainment and driver displays, everything is easy to see thanks to the large, clear icons, and simple menu layout. The home screen can be configured to show the most commonly used features, but all other applications are just a swipe away.
It was pleasing to see that, unlike some other manufacturers, Hyundai is keeping physical knobs for volume, tuning, and temperature settings. Climate functions are in a separate panel below the display screen for easy access, and there are shortcut buttons that quickly launch the map, media, or the home screen.
We expect that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard with a wireless connection, and there is a wireless device charger with a rubberized pad to keep the phone from sliding. An eight-speaker audio system is standard, while a higher-end Bose 14-speaker system will be available.
Safety
As an all-new model, the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 has not yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The new Ioniq 9 gets the latest advanced driver-assist systems. These include forward collision avoidance, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, highway drive assist, blind-spot collision avoidance, safe exit warning, safe exit assist, rear occupant alert, driver attention warning, blind-spot view monitor, high-beam assist, park distance warning, and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic reverse braking.
