What's New for 2019
Trims and Pricing
Hyundai offers four trim levels for the Tucson: SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited, Night, and Ultimate.
The SE is well-appointed with 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, LED headlight accents, privacy glass, heated side mirrors, a rear roof-mounted spoiler, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, power locks, a trip computer, cloth upholstery that resists staining, a 60/40 split-folding rear row, Bluetooth connectivity, tilt and telescoping steering wheel adjustment, a 5-inch infotainment touchscreen, a rearview camera, a sound system with six speakers, CD player, USB port, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio input jack.
With the Value, buyers also get proximity keyless entry, push-button start, heated front seats, an 8-way power driver seat with power lumbar, blind spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision warning.
The SEL adds a second-row USB outlet, dual-zone climate control, and rear air vents.
Going with the Sport trim upgrades the wheels to 19-inches. Additional standard equipment includes a power liftgate with hands-free operation, keyless entry/ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, front seat heaters and more active safety technologies.
The Limited is packed with LED headlights and taillights, leather upholstery, surround-view camera, upgraded cabin trim pieces, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, the Blue Link telematics system, navigation, an 8-inch touchscreen and an Infinity sound system with eight speakers.
The Night comes with stealthy exterior trim, 19-inch BBS alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and wireless charging.
The top-of-the-line Ultimate trim sports ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and more.
A Tucson SE model has a starting MSRP of about $23,200. The Value trim bumps up the price to $24,650, and the SEL increases it to $25,600. The Sport and Limited start at $27,700 and $28,900, respectively. The Night trim comes in at $30,650, and the top-shelf Ultimate retails for $31,500.
Engine and Performance
Standard on the SE and Value is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 161 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. The upper trims work with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which cranks out 181 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. It works with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is also standard, with all-wheel drive available.
The EPA estimates that the 2.0-liter FWD should get 23/30/26 mpg city/highway/combined, while the AWD gets 22/25/23 mpg. The more powerful 2.4-liter gets 22/28/25 mpg with FWD and 21/26/23 mpg in AWD form.
Interior
The new Tucson has a much more refined look and feel. Controls and gauges are spaced out and grouped in accessible locations, making them easy to operate while going down the road. Materials leave a little to be desired, with too many hard plastic surfaces on touch points. The Limited and Ultimate models have more soft surfaces, which helps create a more luxurious feel.
The front and rear seats are comfortable, even on longer trips. Space in the rear is improved, which means taller adults can sit back there in relative comfort. Cargo capacity is 31 cubic feet, or 61.9 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded down.
The infotainment system is an improvement. The standard 7-inch screen has better resolution than the old 5-inch system, and it’s easy to read menus while on the move. The menus are simple and easy to learn. Going with the Limited brings the larger screen, which boosts the experience to a more satisfactory level.
