Overview

Don't confuse the Land Rover Discovery Sport with the larger and significantly more expensive Land Rover Discovery. They are two completely different vehicles. The compact Discovery Sport is the entry-level SUV in Land Rover's extensive lineup. It's similar in size to the five-passenger Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, but the Discovery Sport offers class-leading cargo space and an optional third-row seat. That makes it more family-friendly than the Evoque. With standard all-wheel drive, a long-travel suspension, and other off-road-credible hardware, the Discovery Sport can handle more types of terrain than its key rivals. Competitors such as the BMW X3, Infiniti QX50, Volvo XC60, Audi Q5, and Lincoln Corsair are a bit more refined in the city, but the Discovery Sport isn't afraid of a dusty trail. Like every Land Rover, it's comfortable, sophisticated, and luxurious, but it also has an adventurous spirit and is able to take you on that weekend adventure.

Trims and Pricing

The 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport is available in four trim levels: S, S R-Dynamic, SE, and SE R-Dynamic. A third-row seat is available for any model for an additional $1,200. The S is the most popular version, and it's our recommendation as well. We'll explain why.

S

The base S trim starts at $44,350 (including a $1,050 destination fee) and comes with 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, leather upholstery, heated power-adjustable front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and a 10-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard safety equipment includes forward-collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, parking sensors, and a driver attention alert system. We recommend this trim as it has a solid list of features, standard all-wheel drive, and a long list of available options.

S R-Dynamic

The S R-Dynamic ($46,150) is primarily an appearance upgrade. It adds dark exterior trim, a choice of white or red seat stitching, a black headliner, metallic pedals, and satin-chrome shift paddles.

SE

Starting at $47,850, the SE adds 20-inch wheels, upgraded headlights, a power tailgate, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, and a blind-spot monitor.

SE R-Dynamic

The SE R-Dynamic starts at $49,550 and comes with all the features of the SE trim, plus red contrast seat stitching and black exterior trim.

Engine and Performance

All Land Rover Discovery Sports come with a 246-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It sends power to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Overall performance is on par with the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Lincoln Corsair, Infiniti QX50, and Volvo XC60. The Discovery Sport can feel bumpier on pavement than rivals, but it excels off-road. Land Rover outfits the Discovery Sport with several selectable drive modes — including Grass, Gravel, and Snow — to help tackle varying terrain. Its ClearSight Ground View camera system lets you see what's beneath the SUV. Wade Sensing alerts the driver when the SUV is approaching its maximum wading ability of nearly 2 feet. The QX50, Corsair, and XC60 come with front-wheel drive and the option for all-wheel drive. Only the Q5 provides all-wheel drive as a standard feature.

Fuel Economy

The Land Rover Discovery Sport trails rivals in fuel economy, with Environmental Protection Agency estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. That's significantly less than the BMW X3, Infiniti QX50, Volvo XC60, Audi Q5, and Lincoln Corsair.

Interior

The Land Rover Discovery Sport seats five people in its standard configuration and seven people when equipped with an optional third row. All models come with Land Rover's Pivi Pro infotainment system, which features a 10-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. A Wi-Fi hotspot is also available. Among its competitors, only the Discovery Sport and Volvo XC60 come with genuine leather upholstery, compared with synthetic leather in the BMW X3, Lincoln Corsair, and Infiniti QX50. The Discovery Sport is also the only one that has the option to add third-row seating. However, the X3, QX50, XC60, and Corsair have more cargo space and more front-row passenger room than the Discovery Sport.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Like most compact luxury SUVs, the Land Rover Discovery Sport comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, Amazon Alexa voice assistant, and an infotainment system. Land Rover's Pivi Pro infotainment system has a 10-inch touchscreen, which is easy to read, but the menus aren't always intuitive. Navigation, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 14-speaker sound system are available. The Discovery Sport comes with a larger touchscreen than the Volvo XC60 or Lincoln Corsair.

Safety

The 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport has not been rated by the National Highway Safety Traffic Authority (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

All models come with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a surround-view parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, driver drowsiness monitoring, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and traffic sign recognition.

Land Rover Discovery Sport vs. the Competition

Rugged yet refined, the Land Rover Discovery Sport features a comfortable, upscale interior and attractive exterior design. For drivers interested in heading off-road, the Discovery Sport has capabilities that no other vehicle in this segment can match. However, if you are looking for a daily commuter or family vehicle, the BMW X3, Audi Q5, or Infiniti QX50 may be a better fit. These models provide a smoother ride, nicer interior, and better fuel economy than the Land Rover Discovery Sport.
