Overview

It's surprising that it has taken Lexus this long to arrive at the three-row luxury SUV party, but the 2025 Lexus TX, now in its second year of production, makes up for lost time with a big, roomy interior, a bundle of tech and driver safety features, and a trio of gas, electric, and rechargeable powertrains. Its combination of capabilities makes it something of a unicorn, especially its hybrid options.

Slotting above the popular RX, the TX bridges the gap between that midsize crossover and the larger, truck-boned LX, itself a cushier three-row version of the Toyota Land Cruiser. Lexus attempted a smaller three-row option with the RX-L, an extended body built on the standard RX's wheelbase. It offered only an extra 6 inches of overall length, which made for a cramped third row and not much cargo space.

The TX solves those problems with a longer wheelbase, plenty of legroom in both rear rows, and more cargo space than its competitors, regardless of how the seating is configured. The TX seats seven in standard configuration, but second-row captain's chairs and a rear center console are available if you don't mind reducing capacity to six. Either way, the third-row seat is no penalty box, but rather a relatively spacious area where two adults can stretch out comfortably.

A full complement of in-car tech includes a 14-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and more than a dozen standard driver-assist features. Highlights under the hood include a standard four-cylinder engine that quickly reaches its limits trying to motivate this big SUV. The 366-horsepower hybrid is better suited to the job, or you can opt for the 404-hp, V6-based plug-in hybrid that gets up to 29 mpg combined and generates up to 33 miles of electric range.

This versatility puts the TX up against an interesting array of competitors, ranging from gas-only rivals like the Acura MDX, Lincoln Aviator, and Volvo XC90 to hybrid and plug-in hybrids like the XC90 Recharge, BMW X5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE. And with a starting price of around $56,000, the TX should appeal to a wide swath of SUV buyers.

Verdict

The Lexus TX offers a new three-row alternative to the pricey, truckish full-size Lexus LX. Packed with practical high-end tech and features, the TX is a compelling pick for discerning families, but lacks the excitement or style of other three-row rivals.

What's New for 2025

For 2025, the Lexus TX adds an F Sport Handling package and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display for the non-hybrid TX 350 model.

Trims and Pricing

The 2025 Lexus TX is available in seven trim levels: 350, 350 Premium, 350 Luxury, 350 F Sport Handling, 500h F Sport Premium, 500h F Sport Luxury, and 550h+ Luxury. TX 350 models are available with front- or all-wheel drive, while 500h and 550h+ models are all-wheel-drive only.

The TX offers a broad range of features across its lineup, with some trims getting only a few extras. We recommend sticking with the 350 Premium for maximum value. We'll explain why below.

350

The entry-level TX 350 starts at $56,490 and comes standard with 20-inch wheels, LED headlights and foglights, a hands-free power liftgate, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, three-zone automatic climate control, and ambient cabin lighting. In-car tech includes a 12.3-inch driver information display, a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, seven USB ports, and a 12-speaker audio system.

The TX also comes with Safety System+ 3.0, a comprehensive bundle of standard driver assistance features that includes front collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure alert with steering intervention, and adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist.

The safety system is further augmented with front and rear parking sensors, reverse automatic braking, evasive steering assist, left-turn/oncoming collision avoidance, and road sign recognition. Options include a digital key (allows for locking/unlocking doors, among other features, with smartphone app) and a semi-automated parking system.

350 Premium

The 350 Premium ($59,290) builds on the base trim with a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, driver-seat memory, and power-adjustable, reclining third-row seats. Second-row captain's chairs are optional. We recommend this trim since, for a small increase, it adds features that make daily drives more enjoyable (ventilated seats and sunroof in the summer, driver-seat memory when used by different drivers) and still keeps the base price below $60,000.

350 Luxury

Starting at $61,640, the Luxury trim adds upgraded headlights and ambient cabin lighting, genuine leather upholstery, and heated second-row seats.

350 F Sport Handling

This new-for-2025 trim costs $65,760 and starts with the Premium's features. From there it adds 22-inch matte black wheels, an adaptive suspension, and dark chrome and gloss-black exterior trim. Inside are heated and ventilated second-row captain's chairs (reducing capacity to six passengers), F Sport-themed synthetic leather upholstery, and metal pedals.

500h F Sport Performance Premium

The 500h F Sport Performance Premium ($70,010) essentially mirrors the F Sport Handling (sans sunroof), but adds a turbocharged gas-electric hybrid powerplant with a two-motor electronic all-wheel-drive system, rear-wheel steering, and active sound control to enrich the sound of the gas engine.

500h F Sport Performance Luxury

This trim starts at $73,160 and continues building off the lower trims with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a digital rearview mirror, and a head-up display. It also adds back the panoramic sunroof.

550h+ Luxury

The top-trim TX comes with the same features as the 350 Luxury, but adds a V6 gas-electric hybrid powertrain, also with two-motor all-wheel drive, and a plug-in rechargeable battery capable of 33 miles of electric range.

Depending on trim level, options include a 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, digital rearview mirror, a surround-view monitor, digital key, a head-up display, and a semi-automated parking system.

Engine and Performance

The 2025 Lexus TX offers three distinct powertrains. The 350 comes with a standard 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (275 horsepower, 317 pound-feet of torque) paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front- or optional all-wheel drive.

The TX 500h uses the same four-cylinder as the TX 350, but pairs it with a six-speed transmission, an electric motor up front, and a second electric motor solely for the rear wheels. Lexus calls it an "e-axle" and it provides power to the rear wheels without a mechanical connection to the gas engine up front. An electronic controller decides how much torque needs to go to the back for the best traction. The combined gas-electric configuration generates 366 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque.

Finally, the 550h+ combines a 3.5-liter V6 with a continuously variable automatic transmission and the same dual-electric motor setup as the 500h. Rated at 404 horsepower combined, the 550h+ not only delivers a bit more punch and acceleration, but also up to 33 miles of electric range.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Environmental Protection Agency hasn't released official fuel economy ratings for the 2025 Lexus TX yet, but results should mirror the identical 2024 model. The standard front-wheel-drive TX 350 is rated at 23 mpg combined (21 mpg city/27 mpg highway), while the all-wheel drive model is nearly the same: 20/26 mpg and 23 combined. The 500h hybrid returns 27 mpg combined (27/28 mpg).

The 550h+ plug-in hybrid hasn't been rated, but Lexus claims it should get 29 mpg combined (29/28 mpg) and up to 33 miles of electric range.

These are decent results that split the difference between the TX's main three-row rivals, including the gas-powered Volvo XC90 (26 mpg combined), Acura MDX (22 mpg combined), Lincoln Aviator (21 mpg combined), and Genesis GV80 (20 mpg combined).

Moving into hybrid competitors, the TX 500h stands largely alone as a luxury three-row hybrid, although the Mazda CX-90 makes a good case with its refined, upscale interior and 25 mpg combined fuel economy rating. The TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid also faces few challengers, notably just the Volvo XC90 Recharge, which gets 26 mpg combined.

Interior

Three-row SUVs largely succeed on the strength of cabin and cargo space, and the 2025 Lexus TX has both in abundance. Depending on trim level, the TX can seat six or seven passengers, and is available with either a 60/40-split folding bench seat or two captain's chairs. Opting for captain's chairs adds a removable rear center console that's useful for stashing small electronics and personal items.

With 39.5 inches of legroom, the TX's second row is more spacious than the Volvo XC90's 37 inches or the Acura MDX's 38.5 inches, but just short of the Lincoln Aviator's middle row, which yields 40.1 inches. In the third row, the TX tops its rivals with 33.5 inches of legroom, edging out the MDX (29.1 inches), Aviator (29.2 inches), and XC90 (31 inches).

The TX also easily accommodates cargo needs for family road trips or weekend errands, with a generous 20.2 cubic feet of space behind the third-row seats. That expands to 57.4 cubic feet with the third row folded, and up to 97 cubic feet with all rear seats folded flat. That's 2 to 4 cubic feet more behind the third row than the XC90, MDX, or Aviator, and up to 15 cubic feet more with the third row folded. If cargo space and versatility are priorities, the TX leads its rivals by a wide margin.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Lexus TX comes with a reasonably comprehensive slate of in-car and connected tech, starting with its 14-inch touchscreen. Integrated cloud-based navigation is included, although it's bundled with a subscription to Lexus' Drive Connect services (which includes a free trial). If you'd prefer to use a smartphone navigation app, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features, as is a wireless phone charger to keep them topped up with power. Seven USB ports (three up front, two in each rear row) also mean everyone can keep their devices charged up.

An active subscription to Drive Connect also gets you Intelligent Assistant, which offers voice control over features such as navigation, multimedia, and climate adjustments, as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot. A 12-speaker audio system comes standard, but a 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound upgrade is available for all but the base trim.

Safety

The 2025 Lexus TX has not yet been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 comes standard on all 2025 TX models and includes a full complement of driver-assist features, such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, intersection turn assistance with oncoming traffic and pedestrian detection, evasive steering assist, and front and rear parking sensors.

Full-range adaptive cruise control with curve speed management, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping and lane-centering assist, and traffic jam assist (a low-speed, semi-hands-free driving system, useful for slow, grinding commutes) are also included.

Lexus TX vs. the Competition

The 2025 Lexus TX is still a fresh face in a crowded segment of luxury three-row SUVs, taking on more established offerings such as the Acura MDX, Lincoln Aviator, and Volvo XC90. The Volvo is also available as a plug-in hybrid. The Mazda CX-90 makes an interesting alternative with its refined, upscale interior, agile handling, and more affordable price, but it's not as big or versatile.

Other three-row SUVs worth considering include the sportier BMW X5, although its third row is really tight. The same applies for the Mercedes-Benz GLE (/overview/mercedes-benz/gle/). The larger Mercedes-Benz GLS is definitely roomier, but also definitely pricier.
