2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Review

Overview
Priced to compete with mainstream sedans, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class attracts attention with dynamic styling, quick reflexes, and a cabin that few would mistake for a Honda. There is a trade-off, however, as this luxury-brand sedan is smaller than the average midsize sedan and doesn't come with nearly as many standard features. A strong four-cylinder engine is standard on the base A-Class, and a more powerful version of the same engine is offered in the performance-oriented AMG 35. Both A-Class models are fun to drive, with responsive handling, brisk acceleration, and quick steering. Passenger room is tight in the back seats and there's not much room in the trunk either, so the A-Class is best suited for those who rarely travel with company.
The Audi A3 and BMW 2 Series offer similar packages. Then again, there are plenty of comparatively priced mainstream sedans that provide more room and features. But none have the cachet that comes with owning a Mercedes-Benz.
Agile handling. Expensive-looking interior. AMG 35 version offers serious performance.
Choppy ride. Tiny trunk. Less standard safety equipment than some competitors.
The A-Class is the smallest and least expensive car in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, so it's no surprise that it's short on passenger space and less luxurious than its pricier siblings. What it does offer is strong performance, an attractive cabin, and a stylish exterior that looks nothing like a mainstream sedan.

Trims and Pricing
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is available in two trim levels: A 220 and AMG 35. The A 220 is the most popular trim and it's our recommendation as well. We'll explain why.
220
The base A-Class ($35,000) features 18-inch wheels, keyless start, dual-zone climate control, paddle shifters, a panoramic roof, 64-color ambient lighting, LED headlights and taillights, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and twin 7-inch multimedia displays. Safety features include blind-spot assist, active brake assist, and adaptive braking technology. We recommend this trim for its strong performance, attractive interior, and a price point that isn't out of reach.
AMG A 35
Upgrading to the performance-oriented AMG A 35 ($46,900) brings a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, 4Matic all-wheel drive, AMG-tuned suspension, and AMG Dynamic Select — which changes engine, transmission, suspension, and steering setup to suit your driving conditions. There's even a race mode.

Safety
The current A-Class has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The A-Class comes standard with blind-spot assist, active brake assist, and adaptive braking technology. Safety-conscious buyers might opt to spend the extra $1,700 on the Driver Assistance package, which includes smart cruise control, steering assist, active emergency stop assist, and active lane change and lane-keeping assist. If a collision is imminent, the safety tech will apply the brakes at full power; once a collision has happened, the system will apply the brakes to reduce secondary impacts.
Mercedes-Benz A-Class vs. the Competition
There's a premium to pay for a brand like Mercedes-Benz and that's evident in the A-Class. It's smaller and not as well equipped as mainstream sedans in the same price range, but it does offer impressive performance and a design that stands out in a sea of bland sedans. Audi and BMW have entries that play in the same category. The Audi A3 offers even better performance and plenty of tech. The BMW 2 Series is more comfortable for driving around town, thanks to its compliant suspension.
