2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Review

Overview
Standard driver safety technology; Plush interior; Cutting-edge driver display
Some road noise at higher speeds; Smaller trunk than some rivals
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a compact sports sedan that's fun to drive and comes with many upscale features. The A-Class is the smallest Mercedes, which makes it easy to park, agile, and a great choice for those who have been considering the heralded luxury brand.
What's New for 2020
Trims and Pricing
Pricing starts at around $32,500 for the A 220 trim. Exterior features such as 17-inch wheels and LED headlights are standard, as well as heated power-adjustable side mirrors. A standard sunroof lets in natural light and adds an airy feel to the cabin. When it comes to interior amenities, all models come with dual-zone automatic climate control. The car’s power-adjustable front seats have memory settings, and a standard 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat allows you to expand this sedan’s cargo capacity to accommodate outsize items.
A high-performance trim called the AMG A 35 adds a high-performance engine and sport-tuned suspension, among many other upgrades.
As far as tech amenities go, the A-Class has a 7-inch touchscreen and a 7-inch digital instrument panel. Bluetooth connectivity is standard, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring is on board to help you seamlessly integrate your devices. All models come with HD radio and five USB ports.
Many modern drivers expect their vehicles to provide a full range of active safety features, and the A-Class doesn’t disappoint. The list of standard features includes a drowsy driver warning system, a rearview camera, and forward collision mitigation.
Engine and Performance
The A-Class offers just one powertrain. With all models, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine lives under the hood. This engine produces 188 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, and it’s matched with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available for drivers who need more secure handling in rain and snow.
According to EPA estimates, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class achieves fuel economy of up to 25/33 mpg city/highway -- figures that are competitive for this class.
Interior
Within its cabin, the A-Class presents a deluxe environment for passengers. The design is chic, and the materials used are of premium quality. The interior is also relatively spacious, offering good legroom for passengers in both rows.
Simulated leather upholstery is standard, with real leather offered as an option. Unfortunately, the A-Class lags the pack when it comes to cargo space. This small sedan provides just 8.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
