What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
The A-Class is the smallest Mercedes-Benz sedan, slotting below the CLA in size and price. Two trim levels are available: A 220 and AMG A 35.
The A 220 has a starting price of approximately $33,000, before options, and customers can add 4Matic all-wheel-drive for $2,000. It comes very well-equipped for a small sports sedan, with safety features like blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking to help prevent collisions while out on the road. Adorning the A 220's exterior is 17-inch alloy wheels, run-flat tires, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, heated mirrors, and a panoramic moonroof.
The roomy and comfortable cabin has notable features like leatherette upholstery with 8-way power front seats and driver's seat memory settings. Other key details include remote engine start, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, and a leather steering wheel. The standard 7.0-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth hands-free technology.
Performance driving enthusiasts will appreciate the AMG A 35's upgraded engine power and handling. Retailing for around $46,000, it adds a potent engine, a sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, 18-inch wheels, sports seats, a 12-speaker audio system, and a 10.25-inch MBUX infotainment system.
Mercedes-Benz does personalization better than most carmakers. Options include leather seats, wood trim, a surround-view camera, premium audio, power-folding mirrors, and advanced driver-assistance features like full-speed adaptive cruise control.
Engine and Performance
Starting with the A 220, engine power comes from a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, producing 188 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. It runs on premium fuel, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that provides quick shifts for a sporty driving experience. Paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel also let the driver change gears manually. The A-Class has agile handling and quick acceleration, making it one of the more fun-to-drive cars in the subcompact class. Driver-selectable economy and sport driving modes reconfigure specific powertrain settings for improved performance. The EPA estimates fuel economy in mixed driving of around 29 mpg.
Mercedes-Benz says acceleration to 60 mph should take just 7.1 seconds.
Mercedes-Benz also offers an A 220 4Matic with automatic all-wheel drive.
The AMG A35 employs a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine making 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That engine significantly improves acceleration and speed, transforming the A-Class into a thrilling daily driver. It's still not as quick as some rivals, but its increased power should be enough for most owners. EPA fuel estimates drop to 25 mpg combined due to the car's extra power and larger wheels. Its sport-tuned suspension and large disc brakes provide excellent driving dynamics.
All-wheel-drive is standard. The AMG A 35 can sprint from 0-60 mph in an astounding 4.6 seconds.
Interior
The A-Class has the quality and refinement of a genuine Mercedes-Benz despite its surprisingly low price. Soft leatherette upholstery extends throughout the interior, with comfortable seats and plenty of passenger space. The sleek dashboard features turbine-style air vents, giving it an upscale look.
High-quality materials cover all of the critical touchpoints. The standard infotainment system works well and includes smartphone apps for easy access to a wealth of multimedia choices. The optional 10.25-inch screen is better and comes with upgraded infotainment software. Mercedes-Benz offers many ways to upgrade the car's interior, from elegant color schemes to wood trims, helping you make the A-Class as sporty or luxurious as you'd like.
One flaw of the A-Class is its tiny trunk. There are just 8.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity, meaning you will need to pack strategically. Thankfully, the back seats fold down for extra space.
