2021 Mercedes-Benz CLS Review

Overview
Pricier than the mechanically similar E-Class, you may be asking why the CLS is worth the extra money. It's a valid concern; the CLS has a smaller back seat and less practicality than its sibling. The answer is in how the CLS makes owners feel. Its swooping exterior style and pampering cabin luxury give it a touch of panache that is hard to find elsewhere on the road. One would need to step up to the flagship S-Class and its six-digit price to get a fancier Mercedes-Benz.
The CLS provides superb quietness and ride comfort on the road, and passengers are coddled in fantastic seats. Standard technology surpasses most rivals, though some driver-assistance systems are costly options. Overall, the CLS is a well-engineered luxury car with exceptional style that is as satisfying to drive as it is to admire.
Bewitching exterior style; Impressive cabin comfort; Long standard features list; Smooth and quiet ride
Limited rear-seat space; Some rivals are sportier to drive; Pricey optional extras
One of the pioneers of the modern four-door coupe, the luxurious Mercedes-Benz CLS is now in its third generation and remains as stylish today as when it debuted. That sophistication isn't skin-deep, either; the CLS comes with similar engine choices and technology to the venerable E-Class sedan. The plush interior is a showcase of Mercedes' trademark elegance and high-quality materials. That refinement shows on the road with a velvet-smooth ride.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
Mercedes-Benz offers customers two trim choices for the full-size CLS sedan: the luxurious CLS 450 and sport-tuned AMG CLS 53.
Starting with the CLS 450, pricing comes in at around $70,500 (or $73,000 with 4MATIC all-wheel drive). With that, shoppers get a generous list of standard equipment rivaling anything in the class. From the outside, you can see the sleek exterior is adorned with 19-inch alloy wheels and ventilated disc brakes for effortless handling and stopping power. Standard safety aids like automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring help ensure accidents don't occur while out on the road. There are automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, heated mirrors, and a power moonroof, giving owners many options in changing seasons. The CLS also comes with a motion-activated trunk that helps when hands are full.
Stepping inside, you'll find leatherette trim, heated front seats with memory, remote start, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, adjustable LED lighting, a Burmester audio system, navigation, dual 12.3-inch displays, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
For around $82,000, the AMG CLS 53 comes with a more powerful engine and substantial technical improvements for sportier driving performance. It adds a driver-adjustable air suspension, unique exterior trim, parking sensors, automatic parking assistance, and satellite radio.
Of course, this being a Mercedes-Benz, there are many optional features for customers to select from. Notable is the Premium Package, which adds wireless smartphone charging, an upgraded sound system, and other desirable features. Standalone options include ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, soft-close doors, and a head-up display. Buyers can also add advanced safety aids to make daily commuting a breeze.
Engine and Performance
The CLS' standard engine powering is a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder producing 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It is a great engine, giving the CLS effortless acceleration and passing speed. It's surprisingly quiet, too, allowing it to be a comfortable highway cruiser when desired. The engine uses a mild-hybrid system to improve fuel economy, which is EPA-estimated at 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg highway.
Most buyers will be more than happy with the CLS' standard performance. Those thirsting for more speed and driver engagement can opt for the AMG-tuned 3.0-liter six-cylinder producing 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration comes quicker, and it matches it with a stiffer suspension, larger brakes, and a tighter steering rack. EPA estimates dip to 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway -- still competitive for the class.
Either one you choose, Mercedes-Benz supplies a superb nine-speed automatic transmission. Both powertrains run on premium fuel.
Interior
Mercedes-Benz makes several luxury sedans, and the CLS offers luxury, style, and technology second only to the flagship S-Class. The interior is reminiscent of the bigger Benz with its fully digital dashboard, high-quality trim accents, weighty buttons, and premium steering wheel. The front seats offer excellent comfort for long trips. The CLS comes standard with many features less-expensive sedans lack, like its superb Burmester audio system and separate climate controls for rear passengers.
Unfortunately, seating in the back is cramped due to the dramatic roofline that gives the CLS much of its style. Kids will fit just fine, but tall adults won't be comfortable. Unlike the smaller E-Class and larger S-Class, the CLS is better for two passengers than four. That's not a bad thing -- those sitting up front are spoiled with over-the-top luxury and comfort. Additionally, the CLS has a trunk that is on the small side, so the back seats can be used as extra luggage space when needed.
