2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Review

Overview
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a luxury SUV that is geared at buyers who are looking for a serious off road machine with loads of comfort features. Mercedes first introduced the G-Class to the market for the 2002 model year, even though it has been sold in Europe for several decades. The SUV is still in its first generation of production in the United States.
What's New for 2018
Trims and Pricing
Mercedes makes the G-Class in two trims: G550 and G63 AMG. Standard features for the G550 include bi-xenon headlights, 18-inch wheels, LED running lights, foglights, sunroof, power folding and heated side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, automatic wipers, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and ignition, power windows, power locks, dual zone automatic climate control, power adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, heated seats, ventilated front seats, wood trim, power adjustable steering wheel, navigation, 7-inch display screen, rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity and a Harman Kardon sound system with twelve speakers, satellite radio, auxiliary input jacks, six-CD changer and 10GB digital music storage. G63 AMG models add to the standard features with 20-inch wheels and a stop-start auto ignition feature. A G-Class comes with a factory invoice of about $107,000 for a G550 model and an MSRP of about $114,000. The G63 AMG trim level adds about $21,000 to the vehicle’s MSRP. Going to your Certified Dealer means you will receive an upfront price that guarantees savings, all because you are a member.
Engine and Performance
The G550 is powered by a 5.5-liter V8 engine that produces up to 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Four-wheel-drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission are standard equipment. Mercedes also includes a limited-slip rear differential and a locking front differential as well as a central differential. The EPA estimates fuel economy to be 12 mpg city, 15 mpg highway and 13 mpg combined. The G63 AMG comes with a twin-turbo version of the 5.5-liter V8, boosting power to 536 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. EPA-estimated fuel economy comes in at 12 mpg city, 14 mpg highway and 13 mpg combined.
Interior
Mercedes has kept the interior of the G-Class largely utilitarian, with a boxy design and austere features. That’s not to say that the interior is not plush. The materials used are still of high quality and are put together extremely well, helping justify the high price for the vehicle. In the center stack are more buttons than what you would find in most modern vehicles, but the infotainment system is incredibly easy to use while driving. The gauge cluster is also easy to reference and features a digital readout drivers can use to display a variety of information. Overall, the interior cabin is spacious. Headroom is ample, maybe venturing into excessive, but it makes transporting tall items a breeze. The rear seat area is fairly spacious, but not as much as the front seats. There is a shocking lack of substantial cupholders, with most that are in the SUV being made of flimsy plastic. Cargo area is also quite constrained, which is probably surprising to most. With the rear seats up, cargo space is only 45 cubic feet, but folding the rear seats down expands the area to 79.5 cubic feet.
