2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA Review

Overview
Captures the Mercedes-Benz aura. High-performance AMG versions are a blast to drive. Sleek, well-equipped interior.
Complicated infotainment system. Smaller cargo bay than in competitors.
The GLA successfully delivers the build quality, luxury, and style expected from Mercedes-Benz in an affordable subcompact crossover.
What's New for 2022
Trims and Pricing
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 comes standard with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is optional (GLA 250 4 Matic). Then there are the two specialty performance GLA trims: Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 and Mercedes-AMG GLA 45. The GLA 250 is the most popular model, and it is our recommendation as well. We'll explain why.
GLA 250
Starting at $37,450 (including a $1,050 destination fee), the GLA 250 is the least expensive of the GLAs and it provides the most value for most buyers. Upscale features include a 221-horsepower turbocharged engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, 18-inch alloy wheels, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, and a 40/20/40-split folding and reclining rear seat. Mercedes-Benz also has a wide variety of stand-alone options that let customers specify the exact equipment they want. The GLA also offers several packages, including the AMG Line meant to give the GLA 250 AMG-style looks. For these reasons, we believe the front-wheel-drive GLA 250 is the best value for most buyers.
GLA 250 4Matic
The GLA 250 4Matic trim ($39,450) adds all-wheel drive plus the Off-Road Engineering package that includes an additional drive mode. Don't let the name fool you, the GLA is no off-roader, but the all-wheel drive is worth the additional $2,000 if you live in a snowy climate. The GLA 250 4Matic's other equipment is virtually the same as the GLA 250.
AMG GLA 35
The Mercedes-AMG GLA ($49,000) is the lesser of the two specialty performance versions of the GLA. It features a 302-hp version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, 4Matic all-wheel drive, and an enthusiast-tuned suspension.
AMG GLA 45
The Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 ($56,000) takes the performance even further. It, too, has 4Matic all-wheel drive and a specially tuned suspension, but Mercedes also dials up its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to produce an impressive 382 hp.
Engine and Performance
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 221 horsepower. That's more standard horsepower than you get in an Audi Q3 or the Volvo XC40, and it's plenty for most buyers. The engine is teamed with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Mercedes says the GLA 250 4Matic will go from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds, with all-around performance similar to the BMW X1. Overall, the GLA 250 and GLA 250 4Matic offer very satisfying driving dynamics, combined with a smooth ride.
The Mercedes-AMG models dial up the GLA's performance considerably with more horsepower and sport-tuned suspensions. Mercedes says the AMG GLA 35 will zoom from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds and that the AMG GLA 45 will do the trick in a sizzling 4.3 seconds. Both AMG models perform more like tall sports cars rather than crossover SUVs.

Safety
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA has not been crash tested or safety rated by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The GLA offers a very comprehensive list of the latest driver-assistance systems. Standard safety technologies include active brake assist, blind-spot warning, crosswind assist, and driver attention monitoring. Optional safety and driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active steering assist, evasive steering assist, active braking assist with cross-traffic functionality, active emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, active blind-spot assist, and active lane-change assist.
Mercedes-Benz GLA vs. the Competition
Overall, the Mercedes GLA delivers the impeccable design, engineering, and craftsmanship we expect from the luxury brand along with plenty of high-end amenities, and fun-to-drive power and handling. The GLA is also one of the best-looking crossovers in its class, and it's a solid value, with a base price well under $40,000. Top rivals include the BMW X1, which is a bit more fun to drive than the GLA, and the more affordable Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40.
