2023 Mercedes-Benz GLA Review

Overview
European-influenced handling. Well-finished, intelligently designed interior. Sporty AMG versions.
Overly involved infotainment system. Less cargo space than some alternatives.
The smallest of the Mercedes-Benz crossovers, the GLA offers the styling, feel, luxury, and solidity of its larger brand siblings. And it does so at a palatable price.
What's New for 2023
Trims and Pricing
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLA is available in three trim levels: front-wheel-drive 250, AMG 35, and AMG 45. The 250 is also available with Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Both AMG models are all-wheel-drive-only with higher-specification powertrains. The GLA 250 is the most popular model, and it is our recommendation as well. We'll explain why.
GLA 250
Starting at $38,550 (including a $1,050 destination fee), the 250 is the least expensive of the GLAs. Upscale features include a 221-horsepower turbocharged engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, 18-inch alloy wheels, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, and a 40/20/40-split folding and reclining rear seat. Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive is optional.
The GLA 250 can also be equipped with a wide variety of stand-alone options that let customers specify the exact equipment they want. Among the option packages is the AMG Line package, which gives the small crossover an aggressive look. With judiciously chosen options, the front-wheel-drive GLA 250 is the best value for most buyers.
AMG 35
The AMG 35 ($50,550) is the lesser of the two specialty performance versions. It features a 302-hp version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, 4Matic all-wheel drive, and an enthusiast-tuned suspension.
AMG 45
The AMG 45 ($57,700) is the highest-performance version of the GLA. It features 4Matic all-wheel drive and a specially tuned suspension. The model's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is heavily revised to produce an impressive 382 hp.
Engine and Performance
The lone engine available in the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 221 horsepower. That outdoes the standard horsepower in the Audi Q3 and the Volvo XC40. The GLA 250's engine is teamed with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Most buyers will find the powertrain more than adequate. Mercedes says the GLA 250 4Matic will go from zero to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. All-around performance is much like that of the BMW X1. Overall, the GLA 250 and GLA 250 4Matic offer very similar and very satisfying driving dynamics, including a smooth ride.
The Mercedes-AMG models alter the character of the crossover with additional horsepower and sport-tuned suspensions. The AMG GLA 35 will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, and the AMG GLA 45 will accomplish the same trip in 4.3 seconds, according to Mercedes-Benz tests. More than $50,000 is a lot to pay for a subcompact crossover, but the performance the AMGs offer is tantalizing.

Safety
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLA has not been evaluated by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The GLA offers a very comprehensive list of the latest driver-assist systems. Standard safety technologies include active brake assist, blind-spot warning, crosswind assist, and driver attention monitoring. Optional safety and driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active steering assist, evasive steering assist, active braking assist with cross-traffic functionality, active emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, active blind-spot assist, and active lane-change assist.
Mercedes-Benz GLA vs. the Competition
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLA delivers the design, engineering, and craftsmanship expected from the luxury brand. The small crossover is good-looking inside and out. Its a la carte options let buyers tailor the vehicle to their specifications. Even in base form, it is enjoyable to drive. And the AMG variants turn it into a true driver's car. Top rivals in the small luxury crossover segment include the BMW X1, which is a bit more fun to drive, and the somewhat less expensive Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40.

The Starting Market Average is a proprietary mathematical calculation based on actual recent transactions. It provides a statistically accurate understanding of what other buyers are paying for the least expensive configuration of this vehicle. Adjustments to the calculation beyond make, model, and trim are normalized based on detailed, anonymized transaction information. This accounts for the fact that most or all recently-sold vehicles included different option combinations. The data underlying the Starting Market Average calculation are filtered for extreme outliers and subjected to a weighted averaging process that considers factors such as the recency of transactions and the timing of data lags. In certain instances, the calculated result is adjusted to take account of abrupt changes in the market that may not yet be fully reflected by recent transaction prices. In all cases where the Starting Market Average is shown there is sufficient sample size and transaction detail to be statistically reliable.
