2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris Passenger Van Review

Overview
Smooth ride and agile handling; Excellent materials and craftsmanship; Large towing capacity; Several seating configurations
Minivans offer more room and tech; Only available in one size; Few standard driver-assistance systems; High starting price
The Mercedes-Benz Metris Passenger Van is a midsize commercial vehicle built to transport seven passengers comfortably. Sharing a sturdy chassis with the Metris Cargo Van, it provides more rugged towing strength than rivals, plus a vast cargo capacity. Interior craftsmanship is deserving of the Mercedes-Benz moniker, while the ride is smooth and quiet. The Metris is also surprisingly agile in traffic, and modern driver safety aids are optional.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
The Metris Passenger Van comes in one trim level, priced at around $37,000 before options. Standard features include four-wheel disc brakes, 17-inch wheels, a full-size spare tire, a backup camera, automatic headlamps, and manually-folding outside mirrors. The Metris’ three-row interior features seating for seven people, plus a spacious cargo area. The seats are upholstered in premium cloth, with climate controls for those in the front and rear sections of the vehicle. Remote keyless entry, front and rear power outlets, a five-speaker AM/FM sound system, satellite radio, a WiFi hotspot, and Bluetooth also come included. The Metris uses a 5.8-inch infotainment display.
Mercedes-Benz offers commercial buyers a number of options to help configure the van to their needs. These include changing the standard seven-seat configuration to eight seats or four seats with a much-expanded cargo capacity. Customers can opt for the black cloth upholstery to be replaced with black leatherette trim. Larger wheels are available, as are a range of exterior paint colors.
The comfort and convenience amenities available for the Metris are aimed at taxi, limo, and other driving-service companies. These include driver safety features and heated front seats. A Premium Interior Package adds carpeting, chrome accents, footwell lighting, additional reading lights, a premium overhead console, and illuminated vanity mirrors. You can choose notable items like power front seats, a comfort-tuned suspension, a 5,000-lb towing hitch, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a navigation system, and a more powerful A/C unit.
Engine and Performance
Interior
Mercedes-Benz is one of a handful of companies building commercial passenger vans, and the company’s luxury-car knowledge shines through in this application. While the Metris does not feel like a fancy Mercedes-Benz sedan, it has a more premium appeal than its competitors. This shows in the interior’s overall build quality and material selection. Mercedes-Benz only uses high-end fabrics and plastics, and there is excellent attention to detail shown throughout the vehicle.
The Metris offers a standard seven-passenger seating layout, providing adequate space in all three rows. Modern minivans deliver more legroom for rear passengers, but the Metris is superior in overall interior space. This is particularly true with regards to cargo room. Its 37.4 cubic feet behind the rearmost seats dwarfs the competition. You can also select a five-seat interior for roughly 100 cubic feet of cargo space.
There is a decent amount of in-cabin storage space, with small bins and cupholders located in all three rows. Mercedes-Benz also integrates overhead grab handles and reading lights. The driver area has particularly good small-item stowage points, with an easily-accessible bin under the dual cupholders.
The standard infotainment screen is located in the center of the dashboard. It offers WiFi capability, Bluetooth, and optional navigation, but the screen is small and not touch-operated. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available. Mercedes-Benz offers much better infotainment tech options in its full-size Sprinter-class vans.
