The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a luxury car made for people who desire the utmost in comfort and cutting-edge technology. The S-Class is available as a sedan, coupe, and convertible, with a wide range of powertrains, options, and colors. One of the pioneers of the executive car segment, the S-Class is superb at covering long distances with ease, providing a serene experience for its passengers. The fourth-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class debuted in 2014.
What's New for 2020
Trims and Pricing
All 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Classes come standard with a wealth of features, like automatic LED headlights, power-folding side mirrors, an air suspension, Active Brake Assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive windshield washers. Interior conveniences include leather upholstery, power and heated front seats with memory, ambient lighting, a Burmester surround sound system, COMAND infotainment system with navigation, proximity keyless entry and start, electronic trunk closer, a voice control system, dual-zone climate control, a panorama roof, wireless smartphone charging, and a power rear sunshade. There are eighteen interior upholstery color schemes, many with unique wood and metal accents.
There are six trims available: S 450, S 560, AMG S 63, AMG S 65, Maybach S 560, and Maybach S 650. The S 450 and S 560 are the core trims. The AMG models add serious sport potential from Mercedes’ in-house tuning branch, with handcrafted engines, high-performance compound braking systems, and adaptive sport suspensions. The Maybach trims bring luxury to a stratospheric level, with such additions as extended wheelbases, champagne coolers, and power-reclining/massaging rear seats.
Highlights amongst the many options include Nappa leather, a 26-speaker sound system with mechanically retractable tweeters, semi-autonomous driving (Driver Assistance Package), and four-place seating with folding tables and a heated/ cooled cupholder (Executive Rear Seat Package Plus).
Starting retail prices for the S-Class range from about $94,500 to $236,000.
Engine and Performance
Mercedes-Benz offers a range of powertrains with the 2020 S-Class. The S 450 comes with a 3.0-liter V6 biturbo that creates 362 hp. The S 560 employs a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo that generates 463 hp. Both use a 9-speed automatic transmission, with either rear- or all-wheel drive.
The AMG models get their own, handbuilt engines. The AMG S 63 uses a 4.0-liter AMG V8 biturbo that churns out 603 hp. It uses a 9-speed transmission. The AMG S 65 gets an enormous 6.0-liter AMG V12 biturbo, which makes 621 hp. It is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.
Interior
The S-Class has a spacious and refined interior, filled with impressive details. There is more than enough headroom and legroom, allowing those in both rows to stretch out and relax. The wood and metal trim materials that are employed are top-notch, as is the standard Burmester surround sound system.
Mercedes-Benz provides a generous options list to shoppers, allowing them to build their S-Class to suit their individual tastes. The available heated and ventilated rear seats with power recline and massage provide backseat passengers with incredible luxury.
