2025 Mercedes-Benz SL Review

Overview
The Mercedes-Benz SL has long been synonymous with open-top opulence. A cornerstone of the German automaker's lineup, the SL has cultivated a reputation for engineering excellence, breathtaking performance, and unparalleled refinement. Its interior, often compared to the benchmark-setting S-Class sedan, offers a cocoon of luxury and technology.
Completely redesigned for 2022, the seventh-generation SL is exclusively offered as a high-performance AMG model. With a power range from 375 to 805 horsepower, the SL delivers exhilarating performance while maintaining its grand touring character. While not as overtly sporty as a Porsche 911 or Chevrolet Corvette, it offers a compelling blend of athleticism and comfort.
Beyond performance, the SL excels in luxury and customization. Sumptuous Nappa leather, advanced technology including a Burmester audio system and innovative windshield wipers, and a wide range of personalization options elevate the driving experience.
The SL's combination of power, prestige, and comfort places it at the pinnacle of the luxury convertible segment. Its rivals include the Jaguar F-Type, Porsche 911, Lexus LC, BMW 8 Series, and Chevrolet Corvette, each offering a unique interpretation of the grand touring experience.
Immense power, especially with the plug-in hybrid. Exceptional ride comfort and cabin isolation. Tech wizardry that outshines the competition. A storied lineage spanning decades.
Less agile on the track compared to dedicated sports cars. Rear accommodations suitable for occasional use. Trunk space may be limiting for extended trips.
With its head-turning design, earth-shattering power, and a cabin crafted for indulgence, the Mercedes-AMG SL roadster is a force to be reckoned with in the realm of high-performance luxury. Some rivals have sharper handling, but the SL exudes sophistication and prestige that's hard to match.
What's New for 2025
Trims and Pricing
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz SL is available in four trim levels: AMG SL 43, AMG SL 55, AMG SL 63, and AMG SL 63 S E Performance.
AMG SL 43
Starting around $120,000, the AMG SL 43 comes with a 375-horsepower engine, nine-speed automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive, 19-inch wheels, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding mirrors, a soft top roof, automatic parking assistance, Nappa leather seats with heating and ventilation, driver's seat memory, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry/ignition, remote start, a Burmester premium audio system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an MBUX infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
AMG SL 53
For about $150,000, the AMG SL 55 adds a 469-hp engine, all-wheel drive, adaptive suspension dampers, 20-inch wheels, and a hands-free power trunk.
AMG SL 63
The AMG SL 63, for a price of around $190,000, provides a 577-hp engine, a limited-slip differential, and a head-up display (HUD).
AMG SL 63 S E Performance
New for 2025, the AMG SL 63 S E Performance boosts power to 805 hp thanks to a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Engine and Performance
Depending on which of the three trim levels one chooses — AMG SL 43, AMG SL 53, and AMG SL 63 — you get a handcrafted powertrain that's been massaged by Mercedes' in-house tuner, AMG. Starting things off, the AMG SL 43 comes with a 375-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a mild-hybrid system, a nine-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The AMG SL 55 gets a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 cranking out 469 hp, with standard all-wheel drive and adaptive suspension dampers. Lastly, the AMG SL 63 delivers 577 hp with its 4.0-liter V8, adding in a limited-slip differential for extra control of all that power.
Mercedes says the AMG SL 43 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds. The AMG SL 55 and SL 63 accomplish the same feat in 3.8 and 3.5 seconds, respectively.
The AMG 63 S E Performance is the first plug-in hybrid SL ever, featuring 805 horsepower and 1,047 lb-ft of torque.
Fuel Economy
For the AMG SL 43, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the convertible should achieve 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg highway. The AMG SL 43 is aided in its efficiency efforts with a small four-cylinder engine, a start/stop engine system, and regenerative braking. Meanwhile, both the AMG SL 55 and SL 63 return 14 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.
By comparison, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has EPA ratings of 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, while the Porsche 911 4 GTS Cabriolet returns 17/22 mpg city/highway.
Interior
The SL's cockpit seamlessly blends high-end materials and advanced technology to create an immersive sensory experience. Luxury is at its peak in the 2+2 seating configuration. Premium Nappa leather is standard. The front seats feature power adjustment, heat, ventilation, and different massage programs, while the AIRSCARF neck warmer helps keep the driver comfortable no matter the hour (or season). With its "hyper-analog" design, the SL's cockpit marries traditional craftsmanship and digital innovation. The reconfigurable instrument panel sits within a classic dashboard, which seamlessly transitions into the doors and console. The turbine-style air vents were pioneered by Mercedes-Benz and have since found imitations elsewhere.
Not only does the SL's soft power top boast a sleek design, but its triple-layer construction keeps the cabin impressively quiet and comfortable no matter the speed or weather. In a mere 15 seconds, it folds down seamlessly into the rear deck without intruding on the trunk space. On that note, the SL provides just 7.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity, which isn't much compared to rivals like the Chevrolet Corvette (12.6 cubes) or BMW 8 Series (12.4 cubes).
Infotainment and Connectivity
Safety
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz SL has not been assessed by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Standard safety features on the SL include forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, automatic parking assistance, knee airbags, automatic high beams, and cruise control. The optional Driver Assistance Package adds advanced versions of the emergency braking and blind-spot systems, along with lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and route-based speed adaptation.
Mercedes-AMG SL vs. the Competition
The Mercedes-Benz SL reigns supreme as the pinnacle of luxury in the premium roadster segment. Those seeking a more alluring driving experience will gravitate towards the iconic Porsche 911, with its sportier handling and wider engine options. For a blend of British heritage and high performance, the Jaguar F-Type is a compelling choice. On the other side of the Atlantic, the Chevrolet Corvette offers exceptional performance at a more accessible price point, though it sacrifices the opulence found in its European counterparts.
