2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van Review

Overview
Various body style and drivetrain options; Immense, highly configurable cargo area; Best-in-class driver assistance technology; Refined driver layout, fancy optional multimedia
Pricier than most of the competition; Advanced technology raises price quickly
Full-size vans offer tremendous cargo capacity, but many feel outdated and lack the modern features shoppers want. An exception is the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van and its high-quality cabin and impressive technology. Options include driver safety aids and infotainment, and customers can outfit the Sprinter with an extended wheelbase, tall roof, and four-wheel-drive. The cargo bay offers up to 533 cubic feet, with a 6,636-pound max payload.
What's New for 2020
Trims and Pricing
Starting around $39,000, the Sprinter Cargo shares many components with the Sprinter Passenger and Crew Vans. It's available in three wheelbase lengths and standard or tall roof heights. Rear-wheel-drive comes standard, while four-wheel-drive is available on select body styles. The Sprinter also comes in light- and heavy-duty platforms.
Standard features include a turbocharged engine, automatic transmission, paddle shifters, disc brakes, Hill Start Assist, steel wheels, a full-size spare, a backup camera, automatic headlights, and manual-folding mirrors. Inside, passengers get dual cloth bucket seats, automatic power windows, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, a five-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, and a 5.8-inch infotainment screen.
Mercedes-Benz offers many options for the Sprinter. The Driver Convenience Package includes a multifunction steering wheel, power-folding heated side mirrors, a 12-volt power outlet, blind-spot monitoring, and an Attention Assist feature. The Premium Plus Package has a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a color instrument cluster display, adaptive cruise control, wireless smartphone charging, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen multimedia system with navigation. Other notable options include a memory driver's seat, a rear window defroster, heated front seats, LED headlights, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a surround-view camera, rain-sensing wipers, and a power-sliding cargo door.
Mercedes-Benz also offers several commercial solutions in refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, electricians, telecom, delivery, and general services. Clients can customize their Sprinter with things like a rooftop refrigeration unit, interior insulation, adjustable shelving, tool boxes, steel partitions, ladder racks, a fire extinguisher, and wear-resistant plywood flooring.
Engine and Performance
Two turbocharged engines are available for the Sprinter, one gas and one diesel.
The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas turbo requires premium fuel and makes 188 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It connects to a nine-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive. Buyers needing more power and efficiency can opt for a 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel that produces 188 horses and 325 pound-feet of torque. It mates to a seven-speed transmission and is available with rear- or four-wheel-drive.
Both engines provide plenty of power around town and on the highway. The V6 is much quieter than diesel engines of the past. The maximum towing capacity is 7,500 pounds, with payload capping at 6,636 pounds. The Sprinter has a 90 mph top speed.
Interior
The Sprinter Cargo shares its simple, uncluttered front-seat area with other vans in the Sprinter model lineup. Its low dashboard and tall windows provide excellent outward visibility, while available blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist help prevent accidents out of the driver's immediate view. The bucket seats are comfortable and supportive. Electric seat heaters, lumbar support, and driver's seat memory are optional.
The Sprinter stands out from other full-size vans with its infotainment features. While a 5.8-inch screen comes standard in the middle of the dashboard, upgrades include a 7.0-inch screen and an expansive 10.25-inch display, both running Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system. These optional touchscreens are easy to use, with intuitive menus. Notable tech options include a surround-view camera and navigation.
The Sprinter's cargo area offers up to 533 cubic feet of space. Configurable for various jobs, the cargo area is tall enough for adults to stand comfortably. A right-hand electric sliding door helps lessen strain, and built-in D-rings in the cargo area secure heavy cargo in place. Plastic and plywood flooring is available.
