2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van Review

Overview
Peppy turbocharged power and precise handling. Excellent infotainment system. Comfortable, high-quality cabin. Excellent off-road abilities.
Towing capacity falls short of top rivals'. High starting price.
Shoppers needing a vehicle that can comfortably carry a dozen people or more should look into the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van. It's more expensive than rivals, but the Sprinter has the most luxurious cabin in its class.
What's New for 2022
Trims and Pricing
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van is offered in regular (144-inch) and extended (170-inch) wheelbase variants, with seating for 12 and 15, respectively. A taller roofline is available on the standard-length model for extra headroom; it comes standard on the extended version. Optional four-wheel drive provides excellent all-terrain capabilities.
Sprinter
Starting prices range from $45,300 to $60,420, depending on the body style and platform. Standard features include automatic transmission with paddle shifters, four-wheel disc brakes, 16-inch steel wheels, a full-size spare, a backup camera, traction control, and front curtain- and side airbags. Convenience features include daytime running lights, automatic halogen headlamps, intermittent wipers, LED taillights, and black manual-folding mirrors.
Inside the cabin, the Sprinter comes with black cloth upholstery, power controls, removable seating rows, floor mats, remote keyless entry, front and rear air conditioning, a 13-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a 5.8-inch infotainment display, and USB inputs.
Alloy wheels are optional, as are black leatherette seats and rain-sensing wipers. Mercedes-Benz offers numerous technologies for the Sprinter, many rare to find on a full-size commercial vehicle. For instance, the Premium Plus Package adds features like wireless smartphone charging, an MBUX infotainment system, navigation, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and traffic sign recognition. A chrome grille package is available, as is one for enhanced exterior lighting.
Engine and Performance
The Sprinter Passenger Van's base motor is a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder gas engine making 188 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It has a nine-speed automatic transmission, paddle shifters, and rear-wheel drive. Shoppers can select a four-wheel-drive system for better traction on- and off-road. Mercedes-Benz recommends premium unleaded fuel.
An optional tow hitch imbues the Sprinter with a 5,000-pound trailering capacity.
Interior
The Sprinter has an upscale interior relative to other full-size commercial vans, which shouldn't come as a surprise considering its manufacturer. Even without the fancy optional technology, the standard Sprinter cabin is quite lovely inside, with soft cloth seats, a quiet atmosphere, and well-crafted controls. The dashboard has a clean design with just a few buttons. Cupholders and small-item trays provide adequate in-cabin storage. And outward visibility is excellent, thanks to the Sprinter's ride height, exceptional headroom, and tall windows.
A heated and power-adjustable front row is available, with three memory settings for each seat.
Buyers can select either 12 or 15 seats for their Sprinter. The seating rows are easy to access and have good legroom. You can remove each row to provide more cargo space. Most owners won't need to worry about that since the Sprinter has remarkable cargo space with all seats in place.
The standard infotainment display is straightforward, with intuitive menus and standard Bluetooth. Opting for either of the larger touchscreens adds MBUX software with an integrated navigation system. The Sprinter has other rare tech amenities, like wireless smartphone charging and a surround-view camera.
