2021 Toyota C-HR Review

Overview
Striking exterior design. Smooth ride. Ample standard safety.
Tight rear seats. Underpowered engine. Average fuel economy.
A bold exterior design makes the Toyota C-HR stand out from the sea of today's unremarkable compact crossovers. It also has a wide range of standard safety and infotainment features. But ultimately, it's let down by an engine that doesn't have enough power to make it fun to drive.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
Toyota offers the 2021 C-HR in four trim levels: LE, XLE, Nightshade, and Limited. The LE is the most popular model, but we actually recommend the XLE. We'll explain why.
LE
Starting at $22,770 (including a $1,175 destination fee), the base LE has standard 17-inch wheels, cloth seats, dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and active lane-keep assist are also standard.
XLE
The XLE is priced from $24,805 and equips 18-inch wheels, a motion-activated power liftgate, keyless ignition, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot warning. This trim is our pick for the addition of blind-spot warning, which is a safety feature worth the added cost.
Nightshade
The Nightshade ($25,570) furnishes black interior and exterior accents, such as black fabric with gunmetal trim and black alloy wheels, lug nuts, door handles, chin spoiler, and badging.
Limited
The Limited ($27,825) adds leather seats, eight-way power driver's seat with power lumbar, fog lights, and heated front seats.
Toyota packs a lot of features into the C-HR, making it tough to beat. The Honda HR-V falls short with fewer safety and infotainment features, especially on the base trim. The Hyundai Kona offers an available premium audio system and a larger infotainment screen. The Subaru Crosstrek has a wider range of trims with two gas engines and a plug-in hybrid option.

Safety
The 2021 Toyota C-HR scored well in crash testing with an overall four-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It did even better in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests with a top score of "Good" in all tests earning it a 2021 Top Safety Pick designation.
Standard safety includes pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high beams, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, and road sign assist. Also available are blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Toyota C-HR vs. the Competition
The 2021 Toyota C-HR is a versatile compact crossover with roomy front seats and space for cargo. It's a good choice for couples and single folks who want more room than a sedan, but don't need the cavernous space of an SUV. Thanks to its affordable price, those fresh out of college or on a budget can still park one in their driveway. Even the base trim has a wide range of standard safety features and infotainment with key connectivity and a large screen. The Mazda CX-3 has a more responsive engine and a nicer interior while Hyundai Kona offers more infotainment options. But the Toyota C-HR is a well-rounded choice.
