2022 Toyota Corolla Cross Review

Overview
The Toyota Corolla Cross is an entry-level crossover that offers a solid list of standard features at an affordable price. It sits just above the cheaper and more compact Toyota C-HR and below the larger, pricier Toyota RAV4. It's an excellent option for singles or couples who don't often use the rear seats for adult passengers. It also has plenty of standard safety features, giving you peace of mind at a lower cost. The engine is modest though responsive, and it gets good fuel economy, making fill-ups more tolerable for owners with tight budgets. The Corolla Cross has an attractive interior that includes a standard 7-inch infotainment touchscreen and eye-catching materials despite being an entry-level vehicle.
The Honda HR-V offers more trim levels than the Corolla Cross, but it has a much less powerful engine and fewer standard infotainment features. The Hyundai Kona has a nicer interior and a more powerful engine option. The Nissan Kicks offers lots of standard safety features and similar technology options, but its performance is less impressive.
Affordable pricing. Wide range of standard safety features. Comfortable interior.
Tight rear seats. Fewer optional upgrades than top competitors.
The Toyota Corolla Cross is an all-new subcompact crossover that combines the comfortable ride of a sedan with the cargo versatility of an SUV. It has an affordable starting price and good fuel economy, but rear seating is snug, and options are limited.
What's New for 2022
Trims and Pricing
The Toyota Corolla Cross is available in three trim levels: L, LE, and XLE. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional for $1,300. We recommend the midrange LE model. We'll explain why.
L
The entry-level L model starts at $22,195 (including a $1,215 destination fee). Standard features include a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, continuously variable automatic transmission, 17-inch wheels, a 4.2-inch instrument display, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, two front USB ports, fabric seats, a pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, road sign assist, and full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control.
LE
The LE starts at $24,545 and comes with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a wireless charging pad, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, roof rails, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, one front and two rear USB ports, and heated power side mirrors. Options include a nine-speaker JBL audio system, moonroof, and tonneau cover.
This is our preferred trim level as it offers valuable upgrades such as the larger touchscreen, blind-spot warning, and automatic climate control for a very modest price increase.
XLE
Priced at $26,325, the top XLE model comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch instrument display, synthetic leather seats, heated front seats, a 10-way power driver's seat with lumbar support, rear cross-traffic braking, front and rear parking assist with automatic braking, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather shift knob, and tonneau cover. Options include adaptive front lighting with auto-leveling and a power rear liftgate.
Engine and Performance
The Toyota Corolla Cross is powered by a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission. That's not much horsepower, but this is a compact crossover, not a huge SUV. The smooth and refined engine quickly gets the Corolla Cross up to speed. Acceleration is strong but not aggressive. Still, drivers won't have any problem finding an extra burst of power to pass slower vehicles. Much like the Corolla sedan that it's based on, the Corolla Cross has a comfortable ride that smoothes out rough roads yet doesn't feel overly soft. It's far from sporty, but the steering is precise, and the brakes are strong, so it always feels plenty capable.
Compared to the Corolla Cross, the Honda HR-V is underpowered, with weak acceleration and plenty of engine noise intruding into the cabin. The Hyundai Kona is slower with its base engine but quicker with the optional turbocharged engine. The Nissan Kicks only has one engine, and it's less powerful, making it less fun to drive.
Fuel Economy
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross will return 31 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. Fuel economy dips to 29/32 mpg city/highway with all-wheel drive.
The Honda HR-V is rated at 28/34 mpg city/highway, while the Nissan Kicks is more fuel-efficient with ratings of 31/36 mpg city/highway.
Interior
The Toyota Corolla Cross seats five passengers, with front seats that are supportive and well-suited to long trips. The rear seats can accommodate three, but two fit comfortably. The Corolla Cross is a lower-priced subcompact SUV, so don't expect flashy leathers and wood trims. The good news is Toyota didn't cut corners, so the Corolla Cross gets quality fabrics that look and feel better than its entry-level price suggests. The top trim's synthetic leather seats add significant visual appeal. The 60/40-split folding rear seats provide adequate cargo space. Capacity measures 26.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and a low load floor and sizeable rear opening make it easy to stow oversized items. Front-wheel-drive models have 66.8 cubic feet behind the front seats, and all-wheel-drive variants provide 65.5 cubic feet. Adding to its versatility is the Corolla Cross's ability to tow up to 1,500 pounds.
The Honda HR-V has a comfortable interior, but its cabin design isn't as progressive as the Corolla Cross's. The Kia Seltos has a more upscale interior vibe with better rear seats, higher quality materials, and more cargo room. The Nissan Kicks has a less polished interior and slightly less cargo room behind the rear seats.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Standard infotainment includes a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and two front USB ports. The LE and XLE are both upgraded to provide an 8-inch touchscreen, a wireless charging pad, one front USB port, and two rear USB ports. A nine-speaker JBL audio system is optional on the top two trims. The system is easy to use, and even the 7-inch touchscreen is plenty big enough for either driver or passenger to operate.
The Honda HR-V has only a small 5-inch touchscreen with no smartphone connectivity on its base trim. The Kia Seltos has the option of an even larger touchscreen, as well as an upgraded audio system. The Nissan Kicks also offers upgraded audio, but its standard setup is less impressive.
Safety
The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross has not yet been tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Standard safety features include a pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, road sign assist, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. Optional features include a blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, rear cross-traffic braking, and front and rear parking assist with automatic braking.
Toyota Corolla Cross vs. the Competition
The Toyota Corolla Cross joins the popular and crowded subcompact crossover segment. It stands out for its low pricing and optional all-wheel drive. The Honda HR-V is its most direct competitor, but it provides an underpowered engine, harsher ride, and fewer features on its base trims. Another notable competitor, the Kia Seltos, offers a nicer interior, an optional turbocharged engine, and a great infotainment system. There's also the Nissan Kicks, which has lackluster performance, but a solid list of standard safety features and higher fuel economy ratings than the Corolla Cross.
