2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Review

Overview
The Toyota Corolla remains what it has always been, which is a great, affordable option for those who want a reliable ride that will get them where they need to go without breaking the bank. The price tag is affordable and the performance may not stand out but it gets the job done.
The one catch with the Corolla’s interior options is that a lot of them are not available on the base (L) trim level. This means that those who want a nicer sound system may be forced to take on the costs of other upgrades as well as they move up to the LE or S price tag. This is not particularly favorable for an economy car, but given that those looking for affordability may be willing to trade features for the savings, it is understandable.
Excellent visibility; Apple CarPlay comes standard; Full raft of advanced safety features
Limited legroom in back
Competent and affordable, the Toyota Corolla Hatchback is a compelling choice if you’re in the market for a high-quality practical hatchback with budget-friendly price. This five-passenger compact sedan is available with gas-only and hybrid powertrains. The Corolla Hatchbackoffers a relatively upmarket cabin, and it comes with a long list of standard amenities.
What's New for 2019
Trims and Pricing
The 2013 Toyota Corolla is available in three different trim levels. The Toyota Corolla L has power mirrors, power windows, power locks, remote keyless entry and six airbags. The Toyota Corolla LE has the addition of Display Audio, which is a feature-rich sound system that sports a 6.1-inch touch screen. The LE also adds cruise control to the list of options.
The Toyota Corolla S has chin spoilers in the front and rear as well as a decklid rear spoiler. It also has available style upgrades including the 17-inch alloy wheels that have P215/45R17 tires and integrated fog lights.
Perhaps the best feature of the Toyota Corolla is the price tag, which starts out in the low $15,000 range for the Toyota Corolla L that comes equipped with a manual transmission. Adding an automatic transmission moves the sticker price up to just north of $16,000.
The Toyota Corolla LE in an automatic transmission has an MSRP in the high $16,000 range. The Toyota Corolla S with a manual transmission should be expected to price in the high $16,000 range, while adding an automatic transmission moves the needle up to the high $17,000 range.
Engine and Performance
All three trim levels are powered by the same 1.8-liter four cylinder engine that cranks out 132 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 128 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 RPM. This engine has Dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence and it’s a dual overhead camshaft 16-valve engine.
The vehicle is rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle II or ULEV-II. All three trim levels are available only in front-wheel drive, and only the LE trim level has a standard automatic transmission. Some will want to stick with the manual transmission on other trim levels for fuel economy or cost savings, while others may prefer a manual transmission for performance reasons.
Interior
All three trim levels include standard air conditioning, a fabric rear seat that has a 60/40 split fold-down feature, a multi-function in-key remote keyless entry system, power windows, power locks, a rear window defogger with a built-in timer, a center console with storage space, a dual glove compartment on the passenger side, an auxiliary 12V power outlet, front map lights, front and rear cup holders and a digital clock.
The L trim level comes with a standard AM/FM radio and a CD player with four speakers and an auxiliary audio jack. The two higher trim levels have a standard Display Audio system with a 6.1-inch screen that is not available for the L. This system also has iPod connectivity and control through a USB port, six speakers, vehicle information, hands-free phone connectivity and the ability to connect to the phone book and stream music through Bluetooth wireless technology.
