2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Review

Overview
A sporty hatchback with a Corolla's practicality; Agile handling and available manual transmission; Several included driver safety systems
Some rivals will have roomier rear seats; Lacks a hybrid powertrain like the sedan; No turbocharged engine available
The Toyota Corolla's reputation as a reliable small car has made it a hit with shoppers, but not exactly exciting. The Toyota Corolla Hatchback intends to change all of that, with three sporty trim levels and lots of attitude. Twisty roads will be a breeze with the four-cylinder engine and agile suspension. It still comes with great driver safety features and fuel efficiency, making the Corolla Hatchback an engaging yet practical daily driver.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
The Toyota Corolla Hatchback comes in three trim levels: SE, SE Nightshade, and XSE. With a base price of about $21,000, the SE comes packed with standard features. It has alloy wheels, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, active lane-keep assist, automatic LED headlights, heated power side mirrors, cloth seating for five, a split-folding rear seat, keyless entry/ignition, automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, an eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and in-car WiFi.
The SE Nightshade adds sporty black wheels and exterior accents for around $23,000.
The XSE trim has even more features, for roughly $24,000. Those include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, fog lamps, premium leatherette upholstery, a power driver's seat, heated front seats, a remote engine starter (automatic transmission only), dual-zone climate control, and HD Radio.
Notable options include adaptive front headlights and the XSE Preferred Package, which costs $1,600 and includes wireless smartphone charging, navigation, and a JBL premium audio system.
Engine and Performance
Powering the Corolla Hatchback is Toyota's Dynamic Force 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, which uses Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) to improve performance and efficiency. The engine makes 168 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a six-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission and front-wheel-drive. The available continuously variable transmission works just like an automatic transmission.
It comes with a 13.2-gallon fuel tank. The EPA estimates the fuel economy of 31 mpg combined for the manual transmission and 35 mpg with the CVT.
Interior
The Corolla Hatchback has a similar interior to the Corolla sedan, which makes sense. It's a good thing, too, because it's a very straightforward and user-friendly space. The driver layout is simple and accessible, with a large, leather-wrapped steering wheel and nicely-placed gear selector. Outward visibility is excellent thanks to the thin side pillars, and the seats are supportive with nice sporty bolsters that help keep passengers in place when cornering. The infotainment is also a carryover, and its large screen handles most of the safety technology and infotainment settings. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, as does Amazon Alexa.
Interior space is fairly good. The front seating area is roomy and comfortable, while space in the back is a bit limited. Rear legroom is somewhat limited due to the hatchback's sporty proportions, making it not ideal for taller adults. Other hatchbacks and the Corolla sedan will generally be more comfortable for rear-seat passengers. But cargo space goes up in the hatchback, from 13.1 to 17.8 cubic feet.
