2021 Toyota GR Supra Review

Overview
Meteoric acceleration and sharp handling; Refined and comfortable enough to drive daily; Above-average fuel economy from both engines; Many standard driver safety features
Limited outward visibility and cargo space; No manual transmission offered
Reviving the legendary Supra's nameplate, the Toyota GR Supra lives up to its moniker with lightning-fast acceleration and handling. BMW, a brand that knows fun, partnered to design the sports car's rear-drive chassis and turbocharged engines. It's still a Toyota, so advanced safety aids come standard, and it's comfortable enough to drive daily. The Supra has yet again proven itself to be one of the best sports cars on the road.
What's New for 2021
Trims and Pricing
Toyota builds the GR Supra in four trim levels: 2.0, 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and the A91 Edition.
The 2.0 gets its name from the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood. With a base price of about $43,000, the 2.0 includes technical details like paddle shifters, 18-inch alloy wheels, summer tires, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, auto emergency braking, lane-keep assist, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and heated power-folding mirrors. Inside, passengers get dual leather/Alcantara bucket seats, keyless entry, push-button ignition, dual-zone climate control, carbon fiber trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, an 8.8-inch infotainment display, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and four audio speakers.
The 3.0 has a more powerful, 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and a base price of roughly $51,000. Features include an active suspension, a limited-slip differential, 19-inch forged alloy wheels, memory side mirrors, 14-way power seat adjustment, driver's seat memory, and ten speakers.
The 3.0 Premium retails for about $54,500 and adds leather upholstery, a head-up display, heated seats, a JBL premium audio system, 12 speakers, navigation, Apple CarPlay, and wireless smartphone charging.
The top-of-the-line A91 Edition features black exterior accents, black and blue leather/Alcantara seats, and more for around $55,000.
Available safety features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop & go, and rear parking sensors.
Engine and Performance
There are two engines on tap for the GR Supra, both turbocharged and fun to drive. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine makes 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, and it pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive. The EPA estimates fuel economy of 28 mpg combined, which is excellent considering its performance potential. Then there is a larger, 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, which makes 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. It has the same transmission and drivetrain set up, and the EPA expects it to return 25 mpg.
Both engines run on premium fuel and have a 13.7-gallon fuel tank.
Interior
Interior refinement is often not the first thing sports car connoisseurs think of, but the Toyota GR Supra has one of the best cabins in its class. It offers the same high level of build quality one expects from Toyota, in a more driver-focused cockpit. Almost everything works very well, from the air-conditioning to the paddle shifters, and beneath the elegant switchgear, one can tell that this is a well-constructed car.
One small flaw is the infotainment system. It works well, but it doesn't have touchscreen functionality. Users instead operate it using a selector wheel on the console.
The GR Supra has a similarly roomy interior to other top cars in its class. The headroom and legroom are excellent. Cargo space is small, at 10.2 cubic feet, but sports cars aren't for hauling a lot of cargo, anyway.
