2025 Toyota GR86 Review

Overview
Toyota hasn't made many changes to the 2025 GR86. And it shouldn't. Sure, there's a new Hakone Edition which actually isn't new at all (it was in the lineup a few years back). But this snappy rear-wheel-drive sports car remains what it should be: A place for purists to invest in honest, cheap fun.
How do we know Toyota is serious about the GR86 being a real sports car? Well, a good place to start is the rear differential: Every single GR86 sold has a Torsen limited-slip out back, a sure sign that even though it's not a powerhouse, it's meant to be driven hard. The Premium and Hakone Edition both come with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, which are among the best performing summer tires available. The 2.4-liter flat four is good for 228 horsepower and you can choose between a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. There's a quick 13.5:1 steering ratio and Brembo brake calipers are offered with the performance package (they're standard on Hakone Edition). This is a laundry list of purposefully designed performance parts you'll find on few other cars, and it's all packed into a feathery-by-today's-standards 2,811-pound package.
What's more, every GR86 purchase includes a one-year membership into the National Auto Sport Association and free track day. And Toyota won't void your warranty for it!
Textbook sports car: Light, grippy, rear-wheel drive. Inexpensive.
Tiny back seats are purely for laughs.
Good luck having more fun for less money. Only the Mazda Miata can come close to the 2025 Toyota GR86's smile-per-dollar ratio. But the Toyota's hard top makes it even more for purists in our mind. Get yours with the manual transmission.
What's New for 2025
Trims and Pricing
The 2025 Toyota GR86 is available in three trims: Base, Premium, and the new Hakone Edition. All three are available with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Every GR86 comes with a complimentary one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) that includes one free High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) and discounted admission to NASA-sanctioned events. The Premium is the popular model, and it's our recommendation as well. We'll explain why.
Standard
The standard GR86 starts at $31,085 (including a $1,135 destination fee). Its features include 17-inch wheels, power-adjustable side mirrors, chrome-tipped dual exhaust, automatic dual-zone climate control, a six-way manually adjustable driver's seat, suedelike door trim, a leather-trimmed tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with silver contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped shift knob, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a six-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. When equipped with the automatic transmission, it also gets standard pre-collision braking and lane-departure warning. A 10-inch subwoofer is optional.
Premium
The Premium ($33,685) comes with a duckbill rear spoiler, LED headlights with adaptive front lighting, 18-inch wheels, an eight-speaker audio system, a black and silver-trimmed steering wheel with red contrast stitching, black and silver-trimmed heated front seats, leather-trimmed parking brake and shifter boot, suede-like and leather door accents, and aluminum sport pedals and scuff plates. The Premium is our preferred model because it adds desirable features for a modest price increase, and we really like the duckbill rear spoiler.
Hakone Edition
The new Hakone Edition ($36,405) is a limited edition. Toyota will offer just 860 examples in the United States and each will wear a numbered plate on the dashboard. The Hakone is largely an appearance package that builds off the Premium trim. Though it does offer sharpened throttle response, retuned dampers and steering, and other small tweaks to improve handling and driver engagement. It's available in Ridge Green and comes with 18-inch bronze wheels. Inside there's tan leather upholstery and a shifter with bronze accents.

Safety
The Toyota GR86 has not yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) issued top Good ratings to the 2024 GR86 in all of its crashworthiness categories. We'd expect similar ratings for the 2025 model, which is mechanically identical.
All Toyota GR86 models come standard with an Active Safety Suite that includes pre-collision braking and throttle management, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and more. An anti-theft system with engine immobilizer and alarm is also standard.
Toyota GR86 vs. the Competition
The 2025 Toyota GR86 is an affordable rear-wheel-drive performance coupe that combines all the fun of a sports car with key safety and convenience features. Its engine is powerful and responsive, and the exceptional handling makes it as fun on the track as it is on the open road. The GR86's interior is visually appealing and comfortable, though the rear seats are tight. Good standard safety and key infotainment features round out the package. Sporty alternatives to the Toyota GR86 include the Mazda MX-5 Miata, which is a two-seater and doesn't offer the same aggressive performance as the Toyota, and the front-wheel-drive Volkswagen Golf GTI, which is a more powerful and practical four-door hatchback.

The Starting Market Average is a proprietary mathematical calculation based on actual recent transactions. It provides a statistically accurate understanding of what other buyers are paying for the least expensive configuration of this vehicle. Adjustments to the calculation beyond make, model, and trim are normalized based on detailed, anonymized transaction information. This accounts for the fact that most or all recently-sold vehicles included different option combinations. The data underlying the Starting Market Average calculation are filtered for extreme outliers and subjected to a weighted averaging process that considers factors such as the recency of transactions and the timing of data lags. In certain instances, the calculated result is adjusted to take account of abrupt changes in the market that may not yet be fully reflected by recent transaction prices. In all cases where the Starting Market Average is shown there is sufficient sample size and transaction detail to be statistically reliable.
